      longfin/butterfly spawn 2009

I really like my butterfly koi and do not see many that are sold today that have fins as nice. So, I play around with breeding my own.

This year I moved 2 females and 3 males to the spawning tank on Tuesday afternoon. By the next morning they were spawning. One female did not spawn or at least I do not think she let go of any eggs since she was just as fat when I moved her back to the main pond.

A couple of fry had hatched by Friday night and many more hatched on Saturday.

So far I have not killed them all. I fought the ammonia for several days. Ammonia went to 0, and now I am fighting the nitrite. I hope to set up another tank tomorrow, and a 1000 gallon pond to thin them by the end of the week.

      I know. PICTURES!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations! Can't wait to see how they develop. I love butterflies, the longer the fins the better!

for fun is OK and you can get some experinces to know how hard to be a professional koi breeder.

be honest, that kind of breeding fish is not very good quality.

Nancy... you have some very nice longfins and I agree, it is hard to find them with as pretty fins as the ones you have. Good luck with the spawn

      Hello Iopets,

I am breeding mostly for myself. To me it is like getting presents. With presents you never know what you get untill you open it and with the koi you never know what beauty will develope until it grows.

I am breeding mostly because I cannot find the quality that I like in this country. There are a few and I do mean few for sale here that meet my expectations.

As for quality, I will put the finnage of the ones that I have from other spawns up for comparison of any grown in this country and against those that are shipped in.

Quality for as far as patterns and nishikikoi colors, I am lacking. That I will play with later.

Also I do not agree that all longfins should have typical Japanese patterns and colors. Longfins have very unique pattens and colors all of their own that look gorgeous on them, but would not look good on short/standard fin koi.

People in this country want longfins with nice long fins. They are not as interested in the patterns. They do like nice colors. Many breeders today are more interested in patterns and typical varieties than colors.

I do know that I will not have any problems getting rid of my excess koi. I recently went to local water garden places and I did not see any long fin I would take if they were free. They had high prices for very poor quality butterly koi. Mine difinitely excell in comparison.

I am nearing retirement and am not interested in breeding for a living, but may sell off my excess if I have a very productive year.

Nature tends to thin quickly in the growing out of koi. I realize it takes daily attention and that is difficult for me with having a full time job. So I am happy doing it as a hobbie and for my own pleasure.

I do have a goal though if I live long enough and that is to breed what I consider my ideal longfin. I would like to do what many do not seem to be doing today and that is to improve the finnage and then add typical gosanke colors as well.

It is fun for me, probably because I do not plan to make a living at it.

Iopets, I would like to see some more pictures of your longfins from the top view.

      Thanks,
      Nancy

Nancy, that's such a good way of describing hobbyist breeding! It is like presents.

I really like the last two you posted. The orange on the doitsu is really brilliant. You seem to like the willowy thinner finned longfins.

      Hi, Nancy,

You may misunderstand my opinions. Please, to forget my poor English, because I am a foreigner.

      1. Japanese koi breeders also do not like longfin koi, they said "longfin koi is not koi." But, so what? it is a pet, right?

      2. We are come from Taiwan, not Japan. Many people take our longfin koi, but never want people know the fish is come from Taiwan, and said they come from Japan.

      3. Even longfin koi or regular koi, if you want to gain more breedeing experiences and study koi for fun or for something I do not know. A good breeding fish is necessary. Otherwise, you never have a good chance to know the difference.

Anyway, a pet is a pet. If you like her/him, no need to care any opinin, because they are your pets. For fun only!

The longest of the butterfly koi that I bred was 28 inches - nose to end of tail. He is still growing.

I do not push for growth for my longfins, because it cause I do not like the way they develop.

Up date on my fry. I had thousands of fry post hatching. I am now down to maybe 100 or possibly more.

I left some in the original spawning tank. Place some in an identical tank and put some in a shallow plant pond filled with anacharis that has not been cleaned this year.

The ones put in the plant pond have not been fed at all by me. I did not see any of them untill yesterday when I got a glimpse of 4 in the center of the pond that has a 1 foot diameter spot with no plants. These fry are at least 10 times bigger than the ones that I have been feeding with brine shrimp and artemisia powder food.

I have not had to cull. As usual most of the fry have disappeared. I only saw a couple of floaters a day, so they did not seem to have huge die off. I have not seen any tobys large enough to have eaten that many fry. Tanks are full of tadpoles (suspect) but I have not seen them eat or go for any alive fry. I did see one eating a dead fry.

Glad I am not depending on this for my livelihood. But I do hope I have enough left to get several nice ones to raise for myself.

      details please...

can I ask a few questions....How old was your female at first spawning??

I'm told my butterfly koi is big enough and all I need to do is borrow someones male for 2 days. How big is your spawning tank? (what do you put in it?)

I'm currently searching for a koi with similar scales to mine to breed it with- but yesterday I was told she's a freak of nature- a glitch- one I should try reproduce-

have you ever seen scales on a butterfly koi like they are on my fish?
They are raised and only here and there.

Is it breeding season right now-(tho I guess in Hawaii- there's no winter...)

      sorry so many questions...
