      Pattern...Step Symmetry

Pattern...Step Symmetry is the final thread in the Pattern... series. This group of threads started out with great gusto and has wound up with a whimper. Perhaps the subject matter is getting tedious or old to those that have followed since it's start. If you wish to return to other threads, you may find them by searching for Pattern in the Title Only.

Is Step Symmetry important? Is this only of value in classical patterns or do they have some relevance for today's koi? Somebody kick us off.

OK Jeff, I'll set it up ---

The creation and evaluation of koi as art is a Japanese concept. WE westerners can learn about that basic view of art and balance or we can say- "hey, we're Americans or we're Brits and we'll evaluate it 'our' way thanks!"
I've actually heard this uttered by some frustrated newbies and even some judges!
I think that is kinda short sighted. Kinda like buying a painting cause you like the frame or the way it matches the living room carpet?!

Stepped patterns and their balance are discussions about what all informed Japanese professionals and hobbyists recognize as the MOST evolved koi in terms of art. This pattern represent man's greatest impact on the koi's phenotype and the height of man's driven refinement of a living jewel.

This balance of pattern works best with the very best body shapes as well. It is living proof of beni qualities- depth and finish. It is also just pleasing to see how well the three step pattern lays out on a koi and causes our eye to naturally travel from head to tail. And in that process, come to appreciate how perfect a simple thing like a color carp can be.

Here is a photo of a Koi I am particularly fond of. It was taken a year or so ago but it still illustrates a 3 step or sandan pattern in a Kohaku.
I like the three bold steps, white odome (tail stop) and the fairly classic katsuberra (shoe horn head pattern), which does not touch the eyes. Although I like the pattern, I have heard it referred to as a "boring" three step. What do you think?

I think it is quite beautiful. I look forward to the larger pond I am planning, I need more kohaku. I like the "classic" patterns.

It may well be boring to some, but not me! I enjoy the traditional patterns and not having an example in my pond am lusting. Very nice koi Doc. In your mind, how does this koi fit with the idea of Step Symmetry?

      Beautiful Koi Dr. J

If that koi is boring I want to be bored!!

A "perfect" three step pattern with perfect symmetry is yet to be found.

Symmetry is a combination of pattern balance front to back and left to right and uniform spacing with nose and tail stops. There is also a symmetry to the size of the steps. The 1st and 3rd should be somewhat similar/complimentary in size and the 2nd step being largest. Likewise the nose and tail stops should be similar and the stops between the 1st & 2nd step and the 2nd and 3rd steps should also be similar to each other. THe most important pattern elements are head pattern, shoulder stop, tail stop, and overall patern balance.

I created the attached drawing of a symmetrical 3 step koi. Look at the relationship of the steps and the stops. Try drawing a symmetrical 2 step or 4 step and see what is more pleasing to you? There is a reason three steps patterns are preferred and more pleasing to most.

The focal point of a koi is about the "shoulder" area. This is where the eye tends to rest. A good point for a break between the head pattern and the first body pattern element.
I am glad you like Katelynn my kohaku, now 65 cm and at 3yrs starting to get eggs.

Like art, Koi appreciation is subjective. Your koi is lovely, balanced and not boring.

Tammy I think that would be Nidan.

Nidan - Koi has a two-step Hi pattern.
Sandan - Koi has a three-step Hi pattern.
Yondan - Koi has a four-step Hi pattern.
godan - Koi has a five-step Hi pattern.

      Others would be.

Inazuma This Koi has a zig-zag Hi pattern down the length of the body.
Kuchibeni The Koi has Hi (red) on the lips . like lipstick

You also have Maruten & Single unbroken Hi patterns called Ippon

Think that's right but please correct me if not.

      Graham
