from beginning to end, 500,000 gal. mud pond

The sketch on the aerial photo is roughly the placement of the new pond. the smaller circle is the spring which we were unable to incorporate because it was on a shale bed. however, the spring is making a nice little stream, other springs are filling the pond from the bottom, and we are landscaping the surface spring with ferns and irises. please ignore the line that was drawn going to the existing pond in the front lawn. it was meant to be an overflow line, but we didn't do it! otherwise the pond is close to the plan.

we dug test holes before construction. some filled with water from the surface spring, some filled from below and some didn't fill but were incorporated into the pond.

(you may notice construction going on below the red barn. that is another pond, a lovely shape, but it fills half-way, and then empties. we are working now on a bentonite fix, crossing fingers, and when/if that pond holds water, i will post pics.)

the tlast pic in this series is the inlet where the little surface spring flows into the pond. the pond dimensions -- roughly -- are 150' x 45 x 10-12' deep. it filled from the springs in thirty days. a conservation mix of seed was sown on the field and is now coming up. the tree house now has a reason for being

Hats off to Steve Mosher, pond contractor, Stanfordville, New York, who used his excellent eye while digging and created such a lovely shape.

thanks, everyone. I'm very happy with it.

below is problem-child lower pond. will post the photo story if we get the leak solved. the dimensions of this little thing is 140 x av. 30' by av. 8' deep. would prefer to put the basement koi in this pond because it will be easier to seine. either way, can not wait to get the basement koi into the mud!

Like I said in the other post, the view is gorgeous. I love the mountains in the backround, away from all the cars and commotion. It must be really quiet there.

lol, mike, I'll bet you think you think you're the first one who asked.
used to be a "bull pen" for Flanagan's bull in the late 1800s. i got it from my neighbor across the road. plan to put the air pump in there and nets etc. i originally got it for my stepson. he was about 11. thought he'd use it as a woodshop. we put all kinds of electricity and vices and a workbench and tools and a little tv. cute. for the kid. also put birdhouses up in the rafters with gutters connecting them from ones side of the barn to the other, brought in seeds and hay and cotton, had mouse condos in mind -- and the mice freakin' loved it. Brendan never went into the "shop." stayed inside, played X-box. and now i've got levittown for 18 generations of field mice in there. going to have to evict them .

      um, what was the question?
      lol.

It's an agriculture drain. the water runs from the bottom of the pond, into a tall rectangular tower outside the pond. the tower has a 12' stack of six-inch high plates. the water runs across the top plate and down the other side and out a drain. you can lower the water level by removing as many plates as you want. also can raise water level by adding plates. there may be a better way to describe this, but this is the best i can do!

i have another bottom drain in the lower pond that is a lot simpler. pull up on a gate valve that is outside the pond, water runs out through the drain.
