Impatiens & SunPatiens tutorial. Updated SPRING 2022

Well, because i have some beautiful impatients in my backyard i will give it a try to see if them do well in the pond. I live in zone 11 and lots of people think that this plants dont do well here. I will post a photo to show how beautiful they are. thanks for the tutorial.

Plant the Impatiens once and forget them. They will bloom all season until your first killing frost of fall. They tend to mound and get at least two foot around or more. The easiest plant in your pond. Constant bloom & colors.

I planted the Double ones last year. They did ok. But this year I am going back to the single ones plants in the little 6 pack. They have always done the best for me.

I put impatiens in the stream last year, and I can't believe I didn't get any pictures of them, because they did beautifully, even in full sun. I'll have some at the edge of the pond this year.

When we can get dry enough to finish our water/bog garden Impations look as though they would be a welcome addition. How would they do in the mud and what depth of water do you suggest.

Just finishing off my waterfall right now and am currently planting a few perennials ....its a tad early for annuals in Canada but Ive indeed left spaces for them, impatiens will be in there fer sure.

Just bumping as a reminder that Impatines are showing up for sale now. I plan to buy mine sometime this week. Maybe tomorrow. Home Depot had some in a few days ago, but Lowes didn't have any yet.

Well I put the Impatiens in my pond yesterday. I took a few pics of them this morning. I will post them this evening.

Mine are growing, Nancy - have at least doubled in size within the past couple of weeks - love them!

So removing the soil is key? One of my in-ground impatiens had a main stem broken off last year. I put it in water just to let the buds & blooms do their thing in the house and was surprised when it rooted. I then put it in the stream and it did great. I've never had good luck with them straight out of the 6-pak, but I didn't remove the soil. I'll try that this year. Thanks Nancy!

Yes, very gently remove most all of the soil without damaging their roots. Gary ( Gander ) sent a piece he broke off of a yellow Impatient he had. I had never seen one before. I put it into water and it formed roots. I didn't want to take a chance of putting it into the stream ( rabbits ) so I potted it up and keep it for four years. One winter inside, it just died. But I really enjoyed having a yellow one. I still have not seen them around here.
So try removing most of the soil, and place into your stream after your last frost. Then of course, we want pictures.

As they are somewhat similar ie soft watery stalks and leaves do you think begonias would work ?

I have tried begonias and they just die. I think because they tend not to need a lot of water. You can always give it a try and see if it works for you.

So very nice nancy....I will have to give that a try.. I dont have a stream but have a waterfall... I hope to try putting them in the rocks beside the waterfall... can I put these in a bog filter???

saw a cool thread on floating island. would impatients do well in those floating island? or will they outgrow the island to quickly and maybe not float so well?
