I selected this koi by resisting the urge to pick based on pattern.

I thought the quality was high, the body was good, the sex was probably female, and the pattern was technically good, though not perfectly balanced and not terribly exciting.

I'm going to put her back in the mud so I don't screw her up

That is indeed a good one carl . I personally like 3 4 step kohakus instead of the really large patterned two steps that seem to make the "GOOD KOHAKU" pattern . To me the essence of a great koi is a great interesting pattern . and your one has a lot of potential .

Waiting to hear back from Brady on the sex. His initial impression is female.

I think the shiroji is brilliant. The pattern is boring, but good. The beni looks like it is holding up. Brady's maruzome kiwa tends to be created by expansion of the color on the scales, so that looks like it's where it's supposed to be.

The body is nice, though I'm not sure if there is a lot of potential for growth, but that is not very important to me. I like it, but I was more excited about the other one I got because of the dramatic pattern. Unfortunately, that one did not make it out of the mud, but this was the objectively better one.

I think she/he has improved from the original picture. I don't find the pattern boring, just more traditional. You are probably right that she won't be any 30" monster, but she'll hit 24" I bet. Nice pick and some very good results.

I think the pattern is better than you give her credit for. You can see the difference in the shoulder area as she grows and expands and more white shows now behind the head....one more year and you'll see the difference those little indentations make to help refine the pattern.
