That skin may never come back. If the inflamation is gone then good water is all that's needed

Years ago I purchased some koi that came from Japan.

They broke out in ulcers in quarantine soon after I got them. Treated with baytril and lost most of them any way. Treated ones that were left with melafix and a couple lived and healed. Some after I put them in my main pond, one broke again with an ulcer and then quite a few of my fish in the main pond came down with ulcers. I treated for parasites and used salt and kept water quality in good condition, but fish only got worse. One large butterfly had a huge ulcer almost to the bone.

I treated with melafix for 5-7 days. Fish healed. Even the one with the ulcer almost to the bone and it did not even leave a scar. Still have the koi today.

You say melafix does not work. I say the baytril did not work. But fish treated with the melafix recovered and healed. Sure seemed to work for me when antibiotics did not.

Also used to buy fish locally years ago. Fish always had columularis, fungus, rotting fins, rotting mouth. I started treating with melafix and coppersafe. Stopped having any issues with the new fish.

I have not used it in some time now, but I am not convinced that it does not work and still keep a bottle in case the conventional/preferred treatments of this day and time do not work.

Fish don't break with ulcers for no reason. It takes physical damage or a parasite to break through the cuticle/epidermis to allow the bacteria in. That doesn't make any sense....you're attributing the healing to a product that has very minor anti-bacterial properties and staing that a true antibiotic didn't work. That's like saying take an aspirin instead of chemotherpy...makes no sense. How was the Baytril used

You needed to find a new fish store and the copper sulfate in the Coppersafe would have looked after any of the pathogens that you just mentioned and the Melafix may have helped a bit in the healing afterwards

The problem here is that everyone keeps saying it works but they used it in conjunction with other products more designed for the problem or used the wrong products in the 1st place and then the bit of help that the melafix gave when used was considered magical; or they fixed up their water and the fish's own immune system healed itself.

If you would like to post the Bristol paper or a link to it, I'd love to read it. ...But at this point in time I've seen no evidence, personal, in conservations with other hobbyists or posted on the net, in any aspect of this hobby, that melafix is good for anything more than the simplest of problems.........and in the vast majority of those cases, decent water and good husbandry probably cleared the problem.

People like magic bullets and API got on the bandwagon when Melaleuca
became the cure all for the tree huggers......good marketing!

Un-identified problems need to be identified before anything is ever used in our puddle and then there are much better shotguns than Melaleuca.

I wrote "like a good pharmacist." Unlike most sites and chain stores, PondRx gives pros and cons for each medication, as well as application advice. I have no objection to someone going beyond manufacturers' ad copy.

The Bristol paper requires $$ to view in its entirety, but TTO was found to clear skin parasites in sticklebacks, which are the experimental subjects that most represent freshwater species generally. The point of the study was to find a treatment that did not have the side effects of PP, etc.

Now that ad hominem attacks have started (believes in Cheerios, tree huggers), I will sign off.

Sorry Bill but the way the statement is written suggests that Ted is a pharmacist, which to the best of my knowledge he's not. He simply bought the business from Erik Johnson. Now did he write the review or did Erik....it really doesn't matter, as companies that sell products rarely will tell you that their products won't work. It's usually the other way around...they work really really good.

I haven't had sticklebacks since I was a kid but considering that stickleback can live in very little water in ditches and small streams I wouldn't exactly call it respresentive of koi or aquarium fish. Have a link to the abstract/

I too had fish with ulcers. The meliflex completely healed the underbelly ulcers on the bottom of a fish my friend thought I should euthanize. Both ulcers cleaedup as if he never had one. It also started healing the ulcers of another fish. There is a way to go on a few. I found Tetra's all in one really helps. Just my experience. I went through a lot of medicines trying to fix these ulcers.

The right antibiotic along with quality water and no parasites would have worked the 1st time instead of going through a lot of meds. If you read this thread you know that melafix has very minor antiseptic abilities. Comparing it to a real antibiotic is like apples and oranges.
