      Angry Smelly Water?

Hi, I have a 55 gallon aquarium with some fingerling koi in it until I get my pond up and running. The only thing I've noticed is that is smells, it smells like something is rotting. I was thinking algae? Is there anything I can do to get rid of the smell???????? I was thinking of a bottom feeder sucker fish to get rid of all the algae? Would he give parasites to my koi?

water changes water changes water changes...do you do water changes? What is the filtration on the tank? You don't mention quite how many fiingerlings in there. Filtration should be at least double the size of tank..ie if the filter says for 55 gallon tank, you want 2 of them. With Koi, I'd even say triple.

      Water parameters?

Mary is right on with that advice. Koi...even fingerlings are waste makers and you need to have really good filtration and do regular water changes.

If this is a new tank, then there is a bacterial bloom that occurs until the filtration really gets up and going. The bacteria produce some nasty smells. I thought I was going to have to throw out a new 55 gallon tank setup with three filters, all bigger than needed for the tank. I put in some carbon to absorb some of the odors until everything settled down.

I wouldn't put any other fish in the tank. You have gravel, get rid of it. No need for it except makes the tank pretty. Stick to powerheads and make sure the young have lots of air and water changes..

Yeah, get rid of the UGF. They work great for a little while but they are impossible to clean. Actually I have been using fine sand in the bottom of most of my tanks lately. I find that most of the crud stays on top of the sand where it can be vaccumed out instead of falling in between the graval.
