      Question Fake Bolders- copy

I would like to add several bolders around my pond and waterfall. Does anyone here have experience making them? I like the idea of covering forms with spray foam then finishing, but I do not know where to get a large amount of the spray foam. The small cans from HD or Lowes would be costly.

Use paperback wire lath...bend it beat it to shape, and then plaster it with trinity white cement with the stain of your choice mixed in.

      Khoffman,
We made these rocks out of boxes covered with garbage bags, then covered the boxes with chicken wire, then covered "rock" with about 3 inches of pigmented hypertufa (portland cement, sand, peat moss mix). Gardenweb has a hupertufa forum that is interesting.

I love the bolders. Is the back of the waterfall hypertufa as well? If so, is there liner under it?

      Thanks

      Thanks Lilyfins!

      Kathy,
The back of the waterfall is hypertufa, and we built a shelf above the stream level for the boulders to sit on, the liner is underneath the boulders. We had to be careful the chicken wire didnt tear the liner.

Here are a couple of pics of my fake rocks
The first is of my pond edging which I still have to power wash.
The secomd is a boulder that only has the first coat. The next coat will have texture and color added.

khoffman19, Sorry this old fart doesn't know what an HT is.

sweetpea " I love that name" The rock was made by Taking pieces of 14ga welded fence wire and using hog rings to tie them together in the shape you want. After that I applied two layers of chicken wire, one at a time. The chicken wire has one inch holes. The second layer of chicken wire is attached so most of the holes in the first layer are split by it making the final holes 1/2".

When your ready for mortar you find the bottom of your rock shell and turn it up. Block it so it doesn't roll around. Mix your mortars (I used Quikcrete sand(topping) mix) a little dry and cover the bottom and down the sides a little. This layer will be about 1" thick.
I use latex gloves to apply and smooth it. When your applying the mix don't press down to hard or the mix will fall through.
Let dry about 24 hours and carefully turn it over. Do the top and down the sides just like the bottom. The top texture layer is the same but with colors added.

some of the edging was made in my shop. I made two tables 2' x 2' X 8' feet long covered with plastic sheeting. I cut and bent the rebar attached the welded wire fence to the top and chicken wire to the front. and applied the sand mix in one layer shaped and colored it before it starts to setup.

Greg, What's my commission? Will I need to get a copywrite or a patent? If so I'll check with Zac. :D :D :D

      Talking

      Billy ( and everyone )

I have used a simular method of building "rocks" for Parade Floats. We used mostly "shot" foam. It is sprayed on with a high pressure two part liquid that becomes the foam. But the finish is the same.

To keep the crete mixture from falling through the wire form, you can buy a sheet of the cheap styrofoam "beadboard" type insulation from Lowes or Home Depot and cut it to the shapes you want. If you want to glue the sheets together , use "Great Stuff" spray foam in the small 16oz. cans. ALWAYS wear gloves when using Great Stuff. Or you won't get it off your hands.

Wrap the chicken wire around the styrofoam and go at it , just as BILLY has described. By adding the styrofoam, you make it a little easier to work with.

Another method is to stuff a plastic garbage bag full of crumpled up newspaper. This will work but is not as stable as the styrofoam.

      H.P. :D

The edging are made the same way as the boulder except they are made with one layer of sand mix.
I've made the rocks using great stuff but didn't care for them. They don't take much abuse. I may make one using foam for my skimmer cover.
For my waterfall I will use stucco lath for backing. It's cost is much more than chicken wire.

Another alternative, marine foam. It's a 2 part and can be purchased at places like http://www.westmarine.com and others. It's not cheap but expands quite a bit.

Billy or anyone else who knows,

What do you use in the case of mortar rocks to color?

in my second coat of sand mix I use Buff coloring by Quickcrete. After the sand mix is applied I sprinkle 3 colors of color hardener by Brickform and gently tap it in with an old 4" paint brush.

Concrete dyes are good for a base coat but if your looking for a good looking rock you will need to shade and highlight it with a few more colors.

Do you mix them with your cement or do you apply it to the cement after it's
      troweled?

I haven't played with it much but...
Mix in more and more to have the color fade and increase as you builfd up the second coat....dribble the darker colors in the cracks to make it look aged...and sponge on the color for a subtle change

And the very best bit I can give ya....use the "ferrous" liquid that is used to green up lawns..it is rust in abottle but turns concrete a wonderful brown.....The brown on my rocks has lasted for two years and shows NO wear or fading. and I poured it on after completing the rock.

I also use texture pads I made. I used liquid latex and painted it on a real rock face about 14" X 18" alternated with a layer of burlap, about 5 layers of each. Peeled it off after it dried. I use them with Brickforms colored release.
apply the mortar and sprinkle on the main color and a touch of 2 highlight colors then I texture it with the pads.
