So how does this grow out thing work?

OK...silly question, but since this is my first 'grow out', tell me what we are supposed to do. I assume we measure the fish when we get it? Can someone tell us what the usual protocol is. Do we pull, measure and take pics at certain intervals?

I believe that form was from a previous growout.

The goal is to improve your koi as much as possible. Awards are usually given for the biggest fish, etc. In the case of the showa, I believe Saka will make a determination of the most improved. Size will be part of the equation, but maintenance and improvement of skin quality will be important. Improvement of patter will not doubt come into play, but if you maintain the quality of the koi, the pattern is mostly genetics at this point.

Shintaro will judge the Sanke for whatever he thinks is the best (WWKC members only will participate and winner will get a Japan Trip with Matt).

SU is largest Koi at end, no need to measure when you get it, but please take pictures to track progress. A begining and ending picture (final one due in late fall, probably around 11/1/2008 to include a ruler in the bowl) are required.

So, should there be a pic with a ruler at the beginning?

Beginning size doesn't matter Bro.... Largest fish at the end like the Chagois.

So, if I get a 6" fish and you get a 8" fish mine has to grow a lot to catch up.

Lol, that's what I was thinking, but I've had some fish that were smaller than others and outgrew them by far.

It's most growth, not biggest fish.

I think that measuring up against a ruler or a marked tub is a good idea to follow for learning purpose. It may not be required but it makes a good comparison when looking at pics.

Oh ok, I was going off the past growout result threads. The kohaku growout specifically stated "Most Growth Kohaku (Note: Not the biggest kohaku)".

My Chagoi growouts last year were about 3" apart in size and where the same size 4 weeks later when they went out of QT and into the main pond. A small difference size at tosai is not anywhere close to the difference in size later. That 6" fish will be 8" in maybe 2 weeks. It may take a 20" nisai months to put on 2". So if you did it by strait growth 6" to 16" is much easier to accoplish than 8" to 18". Start off with a 6" and 8" in the same pond for the year, its a coin flip as to which one will be bigger. Also smaller tosai are more likely to be female. When we tried the "most" growth the entry measurements were not done by some or questionably accurate by others.

I won that one but I don't think I did the best job. I was luckly to get one of the smaller tosai in the group was why, I had a 6.75" tosai I think it was. Another person had a Kohaku that grew significantly larger than mine, they had actually just estimated their tosai size (probably on the high side) and it cost them b/c that was the only thing to go by. Even my other Kohaku (which I think finished 3rd) was larger. Tosai size I don't think has a huge impact on nisai size, all the fish I've had and all the past growout results have supported this. We did the total growth last year on the Chagois. In any case its to late to discuss, people have already released their chagois in ponds and QT systems, it would be unfair to require them to catch and measure b/c of a rule change. I don't think the change is a good idea either. There are no prizes involved, its a friendly competition. We can have participants vote on it next time would be fine with me, I should have done that this time but it didn't cross my mind. I'll buy multiple fish again and pick the one smallest available so I can rack up.

This was my thread from last year. Me and Janae V both picked from 4 koi we got in group shipment. We had 2 really small fish, 6" or so? and 2 larger 9" or so (is that about right Janae?). We each picked one small one and one large one. This was after 3-4 weeks of QT, they are same size and water temps were so cold last spring they were hardly feed over this QT period. I knoticed I said in thread water temps were only 57deg then. The "green one" was the small one when purchased I think.
