I added another 25 pounds of grit today to each filter. Now I’m at 200 pounds per barrel. I finally figured out the right amount of flow and frequency of flushing. The water at the top of the filters is crystal clear now; let’s hope and the pond does the same.

I gave everything a real good cleaning this weekend. I made sure there isn't any debris in the SC the pump strainer. I also took out the pre filter inside the SC and cleaned that good to. I flushed both SG filters and also made sure there is no debris on the bottom of pond as well. I'm hoping for some good results...

Also. Yes I flushed both of them before putting them on line. Thankfully. Was nasty.

I just bought mine at Home Depot that has a removable grate. I don't use the grate and I don't use the gaskets and
instead use PL Polyurathane Roofing and Flashing Sealant on both the male and female pieces where the gasket would
normally be and screw the two pieces together on the bottom of the drum. Glue your pvc pipe coming from the pump
      directly to the shower drain.
If the shower grate is not used, is there any reason I shouldn't use a 2" bulkhead I have lying around?

No reason at all, A bulkhead would work fine.

Looks like "green water". A s/g filter won't be able to filter that out as the algae particles are too small.
If it is that a UV is about the only thing that can clear it.

The water in the top of my barrels looked very similar at first, then I reduced the flow and it has since turned clear at the top of the barrel. It has now officially been one week of the filters running with the right flow and the right amount of grit; the water in the pond is significantly clearer. I can now see down 3 feet of the 5 foot depth.

Well.. A UV light is the plan then. I have had this pond for approx 8 years. I have only had it gin clear 1 time. I did the whole filtration system over this year. Added 2 SG's a SC and pre filter. Still have the skimmer to do. SO I think the UV is the last piece of the puzzle. I have probably needed one right from the beginning anyway.

What is the best way to figure how much to flow through the uv? I kinda just picked a spot on the ball valve. It is definitelyy clearer. But not crystal. Been 5 days? I also installed a waterway skimmer which is working amazingly.

usually behind the mechanical filter and pump if possible. Some skimmers such as the savio, can retrofit an uv

That 55 watt UV should be rated at 2100 GPH

First off, Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's out there!
I just need a quick confirmation on the S&G layers.
I've noted that Steve recommends that the final chicken grit layer end roughly 3" below the waste pipe and that the grit layer should be 5" thick. That means the sand and grit layer starts 8" below the outlet to the falls. (and 12" below the rim of the barrel).
It also means that I've got a total of 11" for the other 3 layers.
      Have I got this correct?
      Thanks!

I'm probably not the best person to give an answer since I built my filter for a pool but I just put 3-50lb bags of each of the gravel and 3-50lb bags of grit. I have had the filter running for about 2 weeks waiting on the grit, but I ordered 3 bags.

My barrel is 33 inches tall from base to rim. If I had to guess I would say that the layers are different thicknesses because of the different sized rocks. I have 10.5 inches from the top of the Pea gravel to the base of the outlet pipe. 33 inches minus roughly 4.5 inches for the manifold and grate, minus 16 from lip to top of Pea gravel leaves me with 12.5 inches of gravel in the barrel.

I also used spa flex instead of the conduit 90's on the manifold. I had some on hand and I couldn't find the conduit needed so I improvised.

I did Catfish did on page 74. He mad some 90* elbows for flushing these. I made them like he tells how. I put grit to about 1" below the clean out. I have had my pond for almost a decade and have never had it clean like it is bow. Couple more days and you can read the daye off a quarter 4 feet down. Trust me I tried every snake oil .. I am back in Love with my pond.. These guys no there stuff. I have built all of Birdmans filter components. They work!!!! I would suggest that you read the whole thread if you haven't. A boat load of GREAT INFO!!! Happy Father's Day boys!!!

Just about done constructing my S&G and I have a question about the pea gravel. Is there anything special about the shape of pea gravel that mandates it's use? I know that layer needs to be composed of gravel in the 3/8 to 1/4" range, but would something like 'mini-marble' chips work just as well?

This isn't the exact product, but pretty close:
