      Koiphen Plug *update* Last Page

Hey all... I have been a lurker here for years and think this is a great site.

I live in Chicago and have a small pond in my backyard that we built ourselves. Last year the people from Better Homes and Gardens came and photographed our pond for their magazine. Well we finally did the interview last week and they say it will be published in the spring 2008 issue of BHG Do It Yourself Mag....

WE are excited to see our pond in the mag, and during the interview I gave a lot of credit to this site, and when they sent the draft to check , we noticed that they are going to mention this site as my reference tool...

Pretty cool huh? I will try to post some pics later.

So thanks all for the help over the years and I wiil keep you posted as to the Mag...

Thanks for the plug, Davi and Betsy. Do you have any pics of your pond that we can see?

      That is too cool!

We are going to have our pond featured in the newspaper here...someday If we ever get the landscaping finished

My SIL also sent alot of pictures to HGTV , she has worked with them quite a bit. I don`t think they will be interested though since we didn`t contact them before the project was started. But you never know.....it`s a terrible lot to build on and it would be interesting for people to see what we have done.

      Thanks...

I will take some pics today and post later.

This has been such a long process, it started over three years ago when we were on the Bucktown Garden walk. One of the editors came by and asked if she could take some shots, she did not identify herself. She then called and asked if we would like to do it and schedule the shoot for the following July.

The photographer was a very cool guy that also shoots for National Geographic, he spent over 12 hour shooting and waiting for the correct light.
We still have not seen one shot as they say they belong to them. So originally the editor said the focus was on the multilevel decks, but I guess after seeing the actual shots they are now focusing more on the water features.

The pond and so-forth is not that great, compared to most here, but i guess for such a small area(24x100 lot) it is kinda cool.

Congrats, I know you folks in that part of the city really have to work hard to create a little piece of nature. Not much room to work with.
I look forward to seeing some of the lovely gardens in the Sunday paper these people have built.
      Looking forward to the pix.

      Here it is the pond...

It is kinda hard to photograph as the area is so small, I need a wider angle lens... We basically have 2 small ponds, the upper pond runs down a river on the left to the lower main pond. Them we have the water fall on the right side.

Oh by the way do any of you remember the formula for amount of fish for a given pond? The article had me saying it is 1 fish per square inch of surface area, I think I need to correct to 1 inch of fish body length per each square inch of water surface area. Is that right. I sure would feel dumb putting out bad info. The reason I brought it up at all is that I believe we have way to many fish for our size pond and didn't want people to get the wrong idea and overstock their ponds. I have enough filtration to handle my fish load, but it took a lot of trial and error to find the right mix.

      Thans for looking...

David and Betsy, what size is your pond and what type of filtration did you finally end up using? How many fish. Looks perfect and clean.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

The pond is about 4 feet deep somewhere around 4000 gallons, I think. I have 24 inch sand filter from a swimming pool, used the coarsest sand I could find, plus bio balls in there too. That feeds the water fall. The I have a Bio-tech 10, that flows to the upper pond and small river. I think we have 48 fish in there. The water stays nice and clean even tho we feed a tremendous amount of food. We go though about 75 pounds of food during the season. I change 20% of the water monthly at least, and backwash the sand at that time.

      David
