I'm not sure about that Ryan. I talked to Kevin and he gave me a little info on what some folks did up in the northwest with a similar competition of nisai chagoi. You sure he didn't say 28"

Yes, sure. You all expect a lot! Growout contest is what 6-7 months. The koi will be only 14 months old by end of contest. Growth gets a lot harder as they get bigger.

      Ryan,
When were the fish born? and when does the contest end?. I have absolutely no chance on winning but I'll post my measurerments and pictures.
Regarding what I heard from Kevin: And folks I don't mean to get your hopes up, but this is what he told me.
They had a growout with nisai marusei chagoi and most fish started at around the 15-16" mark. Two years later the smallest was 28" with the largest growing to 34" Now granted they were 4 year olds when the contest was over....but 34". And this contest was held with a club from the pacific northwest. Not the warmest of weather up there.
Looking at keifers pics it looks like he is already over 20". ****, I just wish mine would eat some shrimp, I mean KFC .

They were born in August of 2006. Indoors overwinter. Contest pics and measurements are due by midnight Oct 15th 2007. So goal is 34" by fall of 2010 . Maybe keifer will comment (I was thinking his group looked like 14-18" maybe) , I am bad judge of size, most of my reference is other fish which are growing also.

Why is the contest ending so soon? I thought we would at least give everyone one full year.

We had wanted to make it a yearly event, so finishing everything within the year made sense. Also it make the competition more even for everyone without florida weather.

Well we could just give the Florida people a handicap how about 4"

Wow..I can't believe that these fish are not even a year old. I thought they were spawned in april.
And its funny you bring up the florida handicap. You are definately correct when it comes to growing the fish over a years time that us floridians are at a big advantage....but the ironic thing is by ending the contest in mid october, we are at a disadvantage. I bet everyone is now feeling sorry for us floridians
I know personally that I get some of the LEAST growth of my fish from june till october because the temps are so high. The fish do not want to eat as much and they always slim down. At least mine do, especially the females.
So I would think all of the northerners would be at a big advantage here. Fish kept in the mid 70's will grow much more than those kept at the mid 80's. So maybe us floridians can get a 4" handicap
Personally I just love the fact that we all got some nice fish for a good price and everyone seems happy. I know I am. The best part of the competition is seeing the differences between these fish as they mature.
I'm just real glad I got in on the last minute for a great fish.
I'm just hoping everyone posts their pics at the end.
PS Ryan my GO kohaku spawned last week. My first spawn ever in my pond and only that fish. Definately a female
