      Joyce - what is this?

It is a volunteer. It grows like a strawberry. But if we have a native strawberry, I don't know it.

      Here's another one.

This one I have been calling a "California flame tree". Can you tell me what its real name is?
      How does it propagate?

That looks like the wild strawberry we have here, ours gets tiny berries that have no taste at all.

Savannah, I am not sure, but I think your CA Fire Tree is an Erythrina, perhaps Erythrina x bidwilli.

The other is the native wild strawberry, Fragaria virginiana.

They grow native everywhere in the US,
      and when birds eat them,
then sit in your potted trees and poop,
you get volunteers and free fertilizer.

I'm older than dirt, and I've never seen one before.

This is how we get cedar trees along fence post and telephone lines.

I think it's also called Indian Strawberry around here. For me, here in Houston, unfortunately it is a weed of almost epic proportions. It is firmly entrenched in my lawn.

It looks like wild strawberry. I never saw it growing in water before.
