      What makes a good shusui

Does anyone know what makes a good shusui?

Please someone tell me everything, I have a shusui, and many of you have seen it, I just want to learn more about it.
Please dont go easy on me, I know I am a kid, I absolutely dont want anyone saying its a nice koi just because you think i dont want to be discouraged.

There is absolutely nothing you can say that will make me not like this koi any less. so please be HARD

The row of scale's on the back seem balanced , which is VERY important , not much else to say , I'm not a big fan of that type of koi . Seem's like a young fish , what's the size & age of the fish ?

Depends on the bloodline, but usually the red gets more prominent as the fish gets older. So this fish is going to be very dark as an adult - if that is true.

The uniformity of the scales is the most important thing after the usual, conformation, skin quality, correct number of fins.
But a lighter fish is considered more appealling.

Syusuii, like asagi, should look like the setting sun, red on the horizon (bottom of the fish), blue in the sky (top) and elegant.

      Hi Savannah,

I thought Brett would give you all the answers. The head of the fish is nice. The dorsal scales are very nicely aligned, but are of the larger type of Shusui dorsal scale. I have no problem with that, it is a matter of preference. I would like to see some blue below the dorsal area, the high covers most of the fish, but I think it will be a very nice Hi Shusui.

The Fish is a tosai (Not Japanese Fish, but is how you say 1 year old in japanese), and it is from some hatchery in Tennesee. The length of it is about 6-8 Inches.
I Also noticed a while back that it has kuchibeni.

I personally like to see a little white seperating the dorsal scales from the beni. Also clean head is very important. Stray sumi or shimis lower the quality and this is what I see on most as they get older. Mind you I don't currently have a shusui (sort of, but not really, a longfin that has some shusui qualities), but I admire good ones and will likely at some point get a good one.

      Have you done your homework?
      https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21944

Read what Art had to say and then take another look at your fish. Judging fish is not about whether or not you like the koi - it is about evaluating how well an individial koi fits the standards set for the variety.

My opinion is that even though hi shusui are popular as pond pets, they are less complex than traditional shusui, since you cannot readily evaluate the whiteness of the head. They should tend to place lower at a show. Shusui in general are complex than asagi (fully scaled). So, for a show fish, good asagi are most rare, followed by good traditional shusiu (no body hi above the lateral line), and then hi shusui. Make sense?

When evaluating shusui, symetry is very important - and so is a good clean head. Both asagi and shusui get darker as they mature and the red moves upward. Ideally youngsters will be a very very pale blue, with minimal but symetrical red. High GH tends to promote early sumi development and increase the odds of shimi formation.

Remember that at a given show, what matters is that the koi better matches the standard for the variety than the other entrants in the same class (size and variety).

Why don't YOU evaluate your new purchase, and see if the experts can give you feedback on your intrpetation of the standards?

It is a fair fish. The top seems irregular.

Thanks, Savannah. IMHO, nice, but a bit of pointed nose maybe for me. She started to develop some dark spots (like one you see on shoulder right beside main scale row), so we moved her on and gave her to some friends with a new koi pond. They are club members in the Rocky Mountain Koi Club. They are taking good care cause she is still queen of their pond.

So my koi could be at its prime right now? and it go totally downhill from here.

It probably is not show quality, but it makes a really attracting pond fish.
Keep this stuff coming, anyone hase any pics of some hi shusui like mine? Similar?
Can anyone give me some information that is more closely tied with the hi shusui, including pictures

      Hi Lilhelper
I would agree the Shusui you have is very finished and may get a lot darker. A local breeder had a Shusui spawn this season and I thought this one might be worth a gamble. The head is nice and white. It has a way to go.
There are a few types of Shusui - Hi, where the red covers most of the body. Hanna, where there is a white break between the red at the lateral line. Ki, where the red is replaced by yellow. Pearl, where there are shiney scales along the dorsal line.

Wow, Does my shusui look like anyone else's or an example similar to mine?

I will take another pic of them this saturday and including my new filter
I wonder if they have grown any... please keep this info coming guys and gals, I am really benefited from all of this, along with everyone on this forum.

That shusui only looks like a shusui because it has the Scales.

That must be a rare specimen, It has Gin rin and the kohaku red on it, along with the Shusui scales. please tell me more about this fish.
Has there ever been a fish that has made grand champion in a large show?

Yours is a Hi Shusui, it will stay completely orange with blue scalation, I have Hi,and Traditional, I just got a Hana.

My previous 2 Hi's were Isreali one was about 20" the other about 37", both had unfortunate ends.

The big one jumped out of the pond six years ago and the other I just lost this winter.

I have an eight incher that is up and comming, and it may just be me, but I believe the HI'S grow much faster than the other breeds of Shusui at least that is my observation from the three that I have owned.

They are not to everyones taste, they don't become grand champions but they are a beautifully different Shusui and will make an awsome pond fish. ENJOY.
