What to feed large quantities of Koi Fry?

      Hey everyone,

I'm new the forums, and I am currently researching the best methods on feeding around 2 - 3 thousand baby fry. Ive read that Brine Shrimp is a common method used, and also the natural way with green water? Is there any way to artificially raise them indoors with a readily available food source? I do not want to hardboil 50 billion eggs to feed them for a month . Any info you guys could offer would be helpful! Thanks!

P.S. I am setup already to handle near 5,000 culled Koi.

For koi to develop properly, they should have live food 24/7. If you have to ask how, you are NOT set-up to handle them inside. Outdoors in green water is the best and easiest option, as Brian suggests.

I know exactly how to do what I need to do, Im just trying to find cheaper alternative methods than Brine Shrimp. This is my first year breeding, I normally just resell, yet Im going to try this out and see how succsseful I can be.
Chicken Manure will work also Brian, Ive looking into making that substance, yet I have my doubts in that area because of diseases Ive heard associated with it. Im leaning more and more towards the natural method...I have about 15 mud ponds that have been cycled for two years with other Koi, I believe Im just going to let mother nature do most of the work, with a little intervening from my self with brine shrimp. So basically what Ive listed is about it beside Liquifry which is to expensive....Mother Nature method it is!

-Also thanks for the honest answer guys...Its hard to find knowledgeable people who don't tippie toe around and just give you a blunt answer! Thanks!

Whatever the location, you start with chicken manure, with water in the pond...lead it bake under the heat of the sun or indoors and you will a bloom...a tons of daphnia...live food for the fry. As John at Hanover has mentioned timing is everything...and that it is start.

So do you let it cook under the sun first then put it in the pond? Or put it in the pond and let it bake that way?

We get it from the local chichen farmer...$50 bucks for a truckload delivered .We put barrels of it into the pond on both sides and let it bake in the water when the warmer weather comes...we also do this inside our greenhouse mudponds.
As soon as you can get them on real small hi protein pellets...like Rangen.
      Hope that helps ya.

Why not start up some large microworm cultures? They are extermely easy to keep, very prolific, and cost next to nothing to culture. If you used a series of 1 gallon buckets you would be able to harvest a large amount of worms every day.

2 years ago I raised a couple thousand fry (no my choice). I just feed them large pellet Azoo Growth food that was cheap. After a minute in the water they are very soft and 20 or so fry would be biting off of one larger pellet. They did fine.

From what I have read, by draining the mudpond and liming (slaked lime, not crushed stone or shells) the bottom you sterilize the system and eliminate many potential insect predators like dragonfly nymphs and water beetles. Ideally that would have been done in the fall, but I suspect you can do it now.

The timing is critical for refilling the pond and adding the chicken manure. After doing so you get a green algea bloom and rapid colonization of the pond with daphnia, water fleas, rotifers and other protozoan and small invertebrates as live food (infusoria) for the fry. Eventually you will also get larger visitors, including the predators you eliminated by draining the pond. If the timing is right, those will not gain a real foothold until the fry are larger and more agile.

Maurice in the UK has been spawning and raising koi in mudponds. He has very graciously shared many photos of his experiment on Koi-Bito and NI. I think he also has a webpage. I don't have time to look for it now, but it would probably be very helpful.

Depends on thier stage of development.

Larvea require a different diet than fry as they cannot eat very large food items.

At the farm we start out with a mix of hard boiled egg yolk and weight lifter's amino acid supplement mixed in a blender. We begin at 24 hours post hatch and feed once every four to six hours for two days.

Then the fry go to a pond that has been prepared with organic and inorganic fertilizers to provide for a rotifer bloom. Brine shrimp are waaaay to big for koi larvea to eat.

In house, we've had some luck moving to under 50 micron shrimp starter after going off egg. However, our best development and least amount of deformities is done in the mud pond.

As the koi grow into fry you can start using Rangen number 0 and move up to no. 1 and 2 as they grow.

The biggest problem we've had trying to grow fry in captivity is water quality. All that egg and rich stuff makes for some awful soupy water.

Another method is to set up a small pond, fertilize it heavily and then periodically pump the "green water" to the fry in thier tank.

      Best of luck to you,

      Brett
