      Water draining from hydrosieve

My hydrosieve has been working great since I got it 6 yrs ago. I asked someone to maintain the pond for me while I went on a vacation. I just came back and cleaned out the basket. When I turned on the pump the water got sucked down very fast, emptying out the hydrosieve. I tried dumping buckets of water but couldn’t keep up, it would just keep on getting sucked out. The water in the pump went down as well. This happened a few times over the years but I can’t seem to remember what I did to fix it. I’m getting old lol. Any ideas as to what might be causing this?
My set up is 4”BD to hydrosieve to pump to UV to 2 s&g filters to a shower drain and back to the pond via waterfall and 2 tpr’s.

Hard to work out without a diagram or photo but it sounds like you have a "charged siphon" which pulls water out rapidly. You need a breather vent to stop the siphon effect kicking in. This would revert back to an open gravity drain.

Thanks for the response. I attached a drawing. The hydrosieve stops filling up with water when I have the pump on; just gets sucked out. When I turn the pump off it very slowly fills back up. Where do I instya breather vent? Weird as I always managed to fix this somehow but now I am just baffled.Name: IMG_2020.jpg

I am sure you checked the gate valve to make sure it is in its normal position?

Could there be something restricting the gravity flow between your sieve and bottom drains?

The gate valve keeps staying in the closed position but even when I open it there’s hardly any water coming in thru it.
I tried to use a snake cable to see if there is something blocking the water flow but it wouldn’t go down probably coz of the 90 degree angles.

It's sounding like a blockage in your bottom drain line.

You can try a self propelled water jetter hose & head if you have a pressure washer.
Or try flowing a scrunched plastic bag (parachute) tied to fishing line through the bottom drain, which can then pull nylon cord and a pipe brush. Suggest you tie the nylon cord to both ends of the brush so you can pull both ways and exit the way you entered just in case the blockage is bad.

I've used a stove pipe brush before but upgraded to a water jetter.
