how do I get my 13,000 gallon pond clear, I have 5 filters with mechanical, biological and plant filtration, broken down as follws; it is feed from a aquascape 1000 skimmer with 1 of the 5000 gph pumps and feedss through a 55watt uv light then to the fist filter which is, is a 45 gallon with rock fiteration, media and bio balls. It feeds from bottom up so that large debri is captured and can be drained out. This feeds to a second set up that is the same but instead of rock, it is ALL ceramic and lots of it, bio balls, misc bio/ceramic media and topped charcoal( 55 lbs of total charcoal in filters) then drains back into pond, I have a seperate 10,000 gallon media filters from OSAE that has a 55watt UV light on it and then drains back into pond, I have a 4 foot round small section 2 feet deep that is plants and then water falls into pond across a lot of rocks, this has a 20 watt UV in it. I have 3 pumps at 5000 gph hour each, I only have 5 koi of small to medium size, I have drained it, cleaned it and still dark and yucky. Ihave added Salt of 80lbs. I have added 136 oz of peroxide 3% to kill the Tannis. It is realativily clean of all debri on bottom. But dark and merky and I can not see beyon 2 feet deep at all. I have tested the water and it is perfect except phosphate wich was one half point up. Please advise as I need help with this. This pond is over a year since we reaplced the liner with a new 45mil EDPM liner. Over winter I had a net to keep leaves out but of course as the leave came is pulled inot the water enough to cause the tannis. So a lot of clean up since them so far this spring. Forgot to mention the pond goes from about 8 inches at the sallowest point to 6 feet at the lowest with average of about 3 feet.
Yes back flushing and NO not new, over a year. Was crystal clear then over winter went merkey so I did 50% water change so I could clean it and get everything checked out and the winter leaves that were in the net created Tanis and so as I posted above I have been working on that.
plan on doing a roofing and abor type cover with side panels I can open and close. But that may not be this summer but next. Yes, pond is 99% free of particulates and muck, so yes I belive it is just the tannis but keeping eye on alge and other stuff. Ozone as in natural Ozone or a product?
I don't think UV will remove tannin but it could still be worth increasing the UV strength as tannins and turbidity (cloudy water) will reduce UV efficiency since the UV light can't penetrate water as far. There isn't a downside to excess UV apart from equipment and running cost increases.
Ozone (O3) is an unstable gas that needs to be artificially generated.
Excluding tannin is the best way as a roof also reduces algae, birds, water reflection, snow etc and Kris you collect rainwater.
Increasing your water change regime might be a cost effective solution until you get a roof. I pay for 30,000 liters of municipal water per month but I've got some big tanks and fish rooms.
Perhaps just add a couple layers of filter floss in your skimmer, clean/replace as needed. For a week or so. You may need to clean it a few times a day to start.
