Feel free to give your take

My childhood friend's cousin is planning to do a major renovation to his semi outdoor pond. He asked me if I could take care of his koi (11 in total) while renovation is ongoing. It's gonna be lots of extra bioload added to my existing 8000 gallon system and serious precautionary actions are needed, but I eventually told him I would take them in. As a token of gratitude, he said I could keep 2 of his koi. I'd love to hear your opinions, feel free to judge them. Hopefully I could learn a thing or two from this

I was told #1 and #2 were bought in June 2023, #3-6 in October 2023, #7-11 in January 2024, all were bought as Tosai around 6-7". As of January 2025, the smallest is #7 at 13.5", biggest is #4 at 18.5". The scale in the pictures is in centimeter mind you.

Someone please enlighten me about their IDs. My guess #1 is kohaku, #2 doitsu kogane ochiba, #3-5 karashi koyo, #6 kogane ochiba, #7 sanke, #8-10 showa, #11 shiro utsuri but I'm not so sure. He doesn't remember either, he said his wife picked them because they're cute. That's what she said I guess

Sounds about right, though #10 I don't see white pattern.

Can't see it from above but when I looked at it in person, #10 has a white belly. Which 2 would you pick as the best of the bunch?

I have only gosanke + 1 chagoi at home so #8 #10 blend in rather nicely I presume, #6 #11 could add a little bit of variety to the mix. I'm torn between those four.

The body shape of #1 #2 #7 leaves much to be desired. The koyos (#3 #4 #5) look meh but I like #4 for being tame. I'm afraid its color would stand out in a bad way among a group of kohaku and sanke. As for #9, Nine is Nein.

      What do you guys think?

Well you have to look at them and take care of them everyday. What we think really doesnt matter. Its what you like. As I am sure others here have different opinions on picking a koi.

100% agree with you At the end I'm gonna pick the ones I like the most.

I'm interested to know others' perspective though. That's why I posted it here. Calling a spade a spade is what I'm after. We perceive things differently, maybe others see things that I don't. I feel like it's a great opportunity for me to learn by asking for opinions in this forum. I get to enjoy a koi pond with good water parameters and a bunch of healthy koi, all thanks to lurking here and learning along the way

The goshiki to me is not eye appealing and would soon loose interest
The shiro has probably the nicest shape. And well probably stay somewhat as is. Hard to say.
The aka becko well probably stay as is for many years. But not grow large.
The showa looks nice but it is at its peak and well only go down from here. Especially the beni.

This info is coming from a novice so others can correct me and JMO.

      i would say 10 is a sanke.
      2 & 6 are beni kujaku
      3-5 are kohaku

despite the lack of pattern 9 is probably your best overall but also probably male

Thanks for posting these. I would rank the top four as 6, 8, 11, and 9, in that order. I like lots of variety among my koi, but this is all one's preference. You may have a while to look them over and decide which ones seem to keep drawing your eye.

If it were not so cold, I would say watch their behavior to see which ones present themselves the best. Some may seem more sociable, while certain ones may prefer to stay deep on the far side of the pond.

Good observation. 6 8 9 10 11 are males. They're currently kept in a 3000 gallon pond with less-than-optimal filtration system. I'll be taking care of em starting this April, I'm going to wait to see how they fit in before selecting two. 6 8 10 are the forerunners for sure, all three happen to be males

11, 8, or 2 (despite the thin tail) are my favorites. My final choice would be the one that most complements my existing stock. For me that would be #8.
