Added RDF, what to do with static bed?

      Hi everyone,

My DIY filter setup originally consisted of a three 55 gal drums, in this gravity fed configuration: K2 Static bed (mechanical) -> Srubbies -> K1 moving bed.

I recently added with a RDF drum right at the beginning (before the K2 static drum). My question is, what should I do with the K2 static bed drum now that the RDF handles the fines? Should I consider turning K2 into a moving bed or is that a waste of $$$ since I already have the K1 at the end. I'm open to ideas... including removing it completely. Thanks in advance!

      Andy

Two to 3 K type moving bed filters in parallel after the RDF. Convert the other barrels.

Really? Never though about switch them all to moving beds. What is the thinking behind this? Thought having different types of filters was better...

In theory, having the moving bed filter(s) before a drum filter makes the most sense. In practice, due to high water flow rates, most people place the moving bed filter after the drum filter. Any dislodged moving bed biofilm has to go through the pond system to be caught by drum. I have bottom purge taps at the bottom of all my moving bed K1 barrels. I'm amazed at how much crap accumulates there.

I would keep your static bed filter after your drum as a polishing filter. If the drum works extremely well then you will not have to clean the static bed filter. Or you can remove it a couple years down the track.

Thanks! I should take a look at the bottom of my moving bed barrel... it's been running years without a purge.

You're right, I should let the RDF run for a few months to see if the static bed is still catching stuff. Thanks for the advise!

After my drum, I've split into two moving bed K1 filters in parallel (as well as having independent and redundant moving bed K1 barrels elsewhere). In parallel to accommodate higher water flow rate, bio filter redundancy and for the ability to clean out or isolate one filter without having to turn off the water pump (ever). Example - medication treatments.

I've always planned for the worst but hopefully never need to use this. Some of my redundant moving bed K1 barrels are above water level (pump fed) with a 6mm constant water drain outlet at barrel bottom back to pond. If there is a power outage, these barrels will empty out over several hours keeping the K1 media oxygenated for days as the barrels have loose lids.
