Hi, I'm new to keeping koi, ive had these guys for just over a year now, they've lived outdoors in a big pond, just moved them to an indoor tank for the winter while the pond gets some work done. Just curious what you would call this'color' and also a question about the fold on the tail fin, is that a normal thing or is that likely due to an injury or something along those lines to cause it to have the fold over on the top like that. I absolutely love this one and it's white fins look lovely when it's swimming around in the pond.
Hi fellow Vancouver Islander!
I believe your longfin koi is metallic, and what they sometimes call “dragon scale” which has doitsu (scaleless) genes but with oversized scales. I guess you could call it a Yamato Nishiki (metallic Sanke) but I think that might just be a made up marketing term for a mixed breed koi or pond mutt.
Where did you get the koi? I can make suggestions for dealers on the island who carry nice Japanese imports, if you’re looking for higher end koi.
The folds in the tail are normal for longfins, their fins often have weird or deformed shapes, frayed edges etc.
