      Hikkui question

So this is my goldfish Rangli. He's about 5 years old or so. First photo is today. Second one from around Feb. Small yellow spot where wound now is.

Everything I've researched points to this being a Hikkui. It's only on his red bit. But not sure if it works the same in goldfish. I've read up on treatments and am going to attempt to help him... but wanted opinions here.

From what I heard it's a form of genetic defect and/or skin cancer so there's nothing you can do about it. You can use some iodine to treat the area to see if that helps.

I recall Hikkui as blemishes on the red patterns as like, flattened barely visibly white scaly

      marks.

Brought about by some form of a virus which attacks the red shades and does not

      respond to treatment.

Enough damage to end the fishes show potential.

He is a goldfish. A Shubunkin specifically. Thanks for the replies.

Rangli - his head has gotten a lot worse. I decided to pull him today and remove the growth manually. I've removed a tumor before and it grew back.... but he's in BAD shape and I wasn't sure what else I could do for him. Posting here just to update so I can keep track.

I’ll be interested in your results - please try and post pictures of the operation, as well. I have a large yellow goldfish with similar growths. The fish is not bothered by them, they have been in evidence for a few years now and do not seem contagious to the other goldfish (or koi) in the pond. However, they are extremely ugly and, of course, that fish gets the most attention of the whole pond >rollseyes<.
I am constantly tempted to put him down, but hesitate since the fish is still enjoying life … such a conundrum.

Here's a few pics I took of the little area I used and the pieces of the growth and whatnot. Sedated him with a little clove oil. Removed as much as I could, put a little cold spray on the remainder... and woke him up and he went back in. The tumor was veeeeeery vascular and bled a ton... never seen anything like it. Even cutting directly into a fish doesn't produce that type of bleeding. But it was ultra gross!! At the rate it was growing and with how it looked, my fear was that it would cause him some type of harm. You can see the area where I remove it.

So this is Rangli today. The tumor has begun to regrow - but is not severe yet. When it gets ugly like before - I will attempt the removal again but with a bit more precision. All in all - I think the removal did him some good.

What painkillers do you administer after you have cut the fish up?

He doesn't need painkillers. I removed the growth only while he was totally unconscious, and then applied freeze spray to the area. He woke up from the anesthesia and swam around totally fine as if nothing had happened. I didn't "cut the fish up", I only removed much of the tumor growing on the surface.

This is Rangli now. The tumor isn't that bad, though has regrown a bit. He seems fine and behaves normally.

Excellent update! I’m very glad the fish survived for you - a good learning experience.
