DIY Zakki Sieve

Ok I saw a flush on one of the sieves last night. I believe it took all of about 3 seconds. No exaggeration here, about 3 seconds!!

For some crazy reason I would love to add LED lights in my Z filters. Brainstorm if you have time!

I tried pricing wedge wire screens from a US company a while back. They had a minimum order of $1500 at the time.
They also didn't seem to want to work with me because I wasn't a business.

When I first read what you said about the LED Lights I didn't understand why.
Now that I have two of these things running down in my filter pit I completely understand.
Just too dark down there to see what's in them.
I think LED lights will be my next upgrade project.

I believe the quick flushing is a result of the collection area being at a steep angle compared to the actual zakki that has a flat collection area.
My 2nd filter doesn't clean as quick because I didn't angle it as much. OOPS....

I should probably note that I had this screen made to match the other two.
That way they're all interchangeable.
It should fit just fine in the 18" filter.
I guess we'll see.......

I purchased direct from Alibaba not AliExpress.

I worked with a company called Hebei Aegis Metal Materials Co., Ltd.

The person I worked with was Sean Zhang.
He was great confirming length, width, Micron, as well as direction of the wires.
Always kept me informed of where things were at in the process.

As far as the bend goes, it shipped with a standard sieve bend to it.
I made a slight mod to the top of the bend because of the size of the pipe I'm using on this build.

That being said, the one thing I did not confirm with him was the width of the wedge wire.
What showed up was a little wider than I had anticipated but a test in one of my existing units proved it would be just fine.
If I were to do it again I'd probably specify the wire size. That would probably effect the price though.

Here's some pics comparing the existing screens to the new one.
The first thing I verified when I got the new unit was to check the opening.
As requested it was exactly 250 micron.

Because of this I checked my existing screens (the only mfr. spec I could find said 250 micron) which turned out to be about 450 micron.
I may in the future have new screens made to replace the 450's with "summer/fall" units of 150 micron.
That will depend on the price I can get with smaller wedgewire.

I got a fair amount accomplished on the 18" unit over the weekend.
All that remains is to route the O-Ring groove and attach the clamps, install the deflector and it will be ready for testing.
I had to change the basic design as a result of the smaller pipe diameter.
It was also very difficult to weld on the inside of this unit because of how small the pipe was.
I couldn't crawl into it like I did the 24" units.
For those of you with sharp eyes, I welded the underside of the input side because I couldn't get the welder in on the front side.
I'll caulk the front side just to keep debris and water from settling in the crack.

So last night I decided to cut the grove for the o-ring. I made a revised (18" diameter) version of the oak router guide I made for the 24" pipes.
Problem though....I dropped it and it broke. So I made a better one out of some acrylic. Wish I had done this with the 24" instead of using that piece of oak.
This went together REAL quick and worked great. And I didn't have to try to route the radius of another piece of oak.

So Friday I set up the 18" DIY zakki for a test. I cobbled together some fittings, plugged the waste output and connected up an ES5500 pump.
Here's the video of the test. I believe it was successful.
Now to get this piped into the system.
Hopefully this will be the last upgrade I need to do to my system.
