2023 Sanke & Goshiki cross

This wasn't my first choice, but having seen Russell Peters Kibi Tosai Mix, I felt "somewhat" justified.

The female is a 5 year old Kawakami Goshiki (this picture was taken a couple of years ago):



Male is a 5-year-old Purdin Sanke (he has been used last year with a Kohaku, and with another Sanke female)



The spawn occurred May 26th, 2023.

The spawning ropes seem to be nicely covered, and I've been trickling fresh water for the past day, so hopefully I can get a decent number to sort through.

Haven't given up on the Kohaku crossing that I posted earlier. I'm giving them a break and will try again in a week or two.

I never considered a Sanke & Goshiki cross until I saw Russell's pictures. I'm certainly not expecting anything near what he's showing, but it should be fun watching what comes from this.

First congratulations, now to the meat and potato; that style off Sanke was one of the original Aka Sanke/Asagi crosses to the beginnings of Goshiki about 115 yrs ago give or take a few yrs. But it will definitely be an interesting spawn to watch develop don't know if you've never seen one they call them Goshiki Sanke it's a Goshiki with Sanke sumi.
Let me add this information and what's interesting when they wrote this information who ever wrote it was not completely informed about Goshiki when the person mentions that the sumi on the nose is a negative and a few years ago I watched an interview with one of most famous Goshiki breeders in Japan and when asked about the sumi on the nose he described as dirt on the nose and said it was an important feature on a Goshiki.

I think the goshiki characteristics look best when they are rather bold, like the first one in Orlando's post. I guess with young goshiki, they tend to change quite a bit as they grow up, adding challenge to selection. Fortunately, we have a resident goshiki guru on the forum.

Sean I really like your pairing, I think in the near future we should exchange email addresses and all explain why about 5 or 6 yrs ago the largest koi farm in Ocala, FL invited me to their farm and as I looked over at his goshiki selections of Goshiki that were kept to grow on I showed them some pictures and explained what I look for in a Goshiki spawn they told me "I wish I would have seen those pictures before we culled ours, it looks like got rid of all the nicer one's " What can I say. I guess we are here to help each other and remain humble in the process. I looked at the link and it is what it is those are imported mine are homegrown. I get several styles of Goshiki but I cull for what am pursuing I have to say now that I've learned on how to understand what am looking at I also like to keep these, Shunrai.

Saw the first fry of this spawn. There were likely some yesterday, but saw several today.

Sean watch the one's with a gray base and small patches of sumi. If you want to save feed and make more room in a hurry cull all your shiro muji and all the Benigoi just my two cents but they are looking really good

Given that this year I have lots of extra capacity, my plan is to "mock cull" the ones you suggest and any others that don't seem to have good characteristics. Basically, I'll separate the keepers from the potential culls. but next spring I can assess if any were mistakenly "culled" and can then be upgraded to keepers. Of course, any with deformities or size issues will be culled. A little extra food is a small price to pay to satisfy my curiosity. Most years, I don't have this extra capacity, so this is a new approach for me.

That seems like a good strategy given your circumstances this year. You sure have an interesting group to watch from this crossing.

Thanks Matt. That's funny about the bass, however, given my luck this season I would not be too surprised to find something lurking in my tanks.

It's been a busy season, but I got a chance today to go through one the four tanks of the Goshiki x Sanke offspring. Overall. the growth hasn't been my best, but survival was high and deformities were low, so I've got a lot of these. The parents aren't monsters, but decent size, so I expect these to catch up pretty well.

First shot is the total number of fish that were pulled from this one tank, followed by individual photos that I found as interesting. Sorry about the glare!! I wish I could reliably get good pictures!!
