      Retrofit Bottom Drain...

hey guys and gals... quick question.

I want to retrofit a bottom drain in pond. Can i pipe it to a pressurized canister filter and have it return to pond. I figured if i do it this way then i am pulling out the debris and filtering the crap lol then i can backwash as needed.

Thanks in advance for all the help.
      Ed

      Ed,

Lacking info on your pond setup makes me make some large assumptions. But generally, you can use a retrofit bottom drain with a 3" or 4" outlet direct to a external pump (as long as it will develop a suction) and then send it to a bead filter. The pump will grind up larger items and you may backwash often. Catching the bigger debris before the pump is good.
If you have a "leaf basket" on your pump that will help. If your pump lacks it, a HydroSieve may work for you.
Since your piping and pump will be above the pond water level, you may need to prime your pump and install a check valve whenever you stop to clean; if the pump will not develop enough suction.
