      Anchor worm or something else?

      Hi all,

Just did my annual post- winter clean and inspection on my pond that is shared between koi and goldfish. I found this guy waiting for me:

Any idea what it is for sure before I try to treat? Mid-summer last year I had a ich battle in the pond and then every thing has been good other than very bad water for a week due to deer and dogs knocking some planters into it and throwing the balance off. The cleaning pulled a large amount of biological matter out and sand/gravel due to spilled pots from my planting shelf. I was doing daily partial changes for the week until I could drain it over the weekend.

No other fish are showing any visible symptoms and this guy is now in a quarantine tank.

What are we looking at? Is it the black area on the scales? To me, that just looks like a shimmy which is a black "freckle" that sometimes appears on koi. An anchor worm looks like a short white hair hanging off the body, maybe with what appears to be a forked tail at the end which is actually the two egg sacs.

The black spot and this is a goldfish. It is a raised cluster and mass like of worm looking growth that the photo doesn't show in enough detail when loaded to the web. If I were trying to describe it, think a clump of black worms emerging from under the scales.

Found this but have no idea as not familiar with goldfishs issues.

      And this:

It sounds like black spot parasites appear smaller and more peppery looking. If you have a microscope, try scraping the spot to see what’s up.

      Another interesting read:

Thank you for the responses. Looks like I'm going to try treatment with Praziquantel and picked up some dimiln-x as a backup. Going to treat the whole system just in case it is flukes as some of those articles suggest.

I’ve never seen in koi. I’d hit that spot with a swab of peroxide.
