Purina Aquamax 500, affordable fish food I've been using.

High protein high fat for growth. Fish meal is the primary ingredient.

Stays well afloat and doesn't cloud up water. Fish poop has good consistency.

Been using it this year for growing with good results.

Seems to check most of the boxes for my needs and it's only $60 for 50lbs.

Give it a try and don't let the Purina brand turn you off.

Interesting...main ingredients are a match for other brand's growth formula, but much much cheaper.

I have been feeding my koi 2/3 cat food, 1/3 koi food.

What I have been seeing is that my koi like the cat food more than the koi food, and they look better now than they did when I only feed them with koi food.

My explanation is that the ordinary koi food is not better than the cat food anyway, though 2-3 times more expensive.

Aquamax 500 is a carnivore blend good for fast early growth in koi. Best to switch to a omnivore blend later in growth cycle for finishing. There are also low cost omnivore blends a little lower in both fat and protein.

Yes, I agree, even in winter I'll be going with plant based protein until spring time.
I think first 3-4 years is good with this food.

Can also mix it up with 50/50 using another plant based protein food and feed year round.

Exactly what kind of cat food do you use, and do you know of a USA equivalent?

      Best,

Ah...so this is the catch, funny I was actually thinking about what koi eat in the wild, I guess mostly plant based diet.

I have tested all the brands of dry cat food I could find here, and I chose the only one that float. It's brand is Mjau. I cannot say that it is better or less good than the other brands.
