They are designed for downflow. Best changeovers involve opening up the bottom laterals so they don't plug and just using sinking filter media.

If using floating media the internal inlet and outlet plumbing needs to be reversed. This makes the water flow evenly through the now floating media. Many posted conversions don't do this and have channeling and poor performance.

Over the years I've seen bioballs, BioFlo 9, sinking K media (generic available also), Evolution Aqua sinking tube media and small 1/2 inch lava bits used in gas fireplaces used in the conversion. Do a Google search for sinking pond filter media and you'll find it. The name brand material is kind of expensive.

you need to switch the internals. the now laterals are up on top . open up the slats on the lateral. you need to run the multiport valve in reverse. that is constantly in backwash mode to make water to in upward direction. the output now is your waste line ( now clean water) going back to your pond. to back wash in future then you run in filter mode. I was told up flow with floating media because everything clumps together on the top and can filter better from a mechanical standpoint.

Some multi port valves can be reversed but you create confusion because the filter will now filter in the backwash position and some positions like "close" (or recirculate) will no longer work. For us the best way is to use some PVC pipe, elbows and 45s to invert the internals so the upper pipe discharges to the bottom and the lower pipe collects water from the top of the filter.
