      2022 Sanke & Kohaku cross

This spring, I paired a Dainichi Kohaku with a nice Sanke that I used previously .

I apologize for the quality of the pictures. I was short on time and couldn't seem to eliminate the glare.

Wide range of offspring. Are the platinum in there without beni or sumi?

      Hi Noahsnana,

There are at least 4 (for now) that are pure platinum. The one in the top right of the 4th picture has sumi deep within the skin. I've used the male previously with another sanke and the results were pretty good - he's got very thick beni, but is not very large. The female is not a great Kohaku by most standards, but she's big. In previous years, she was used to produce Goromo which turned out pretty good.

This result is pretty much what I was expecting - now just hoping that some of the Kohaku inherit their Dad's beni.

Some good patterns and thick, robust builds. Way to go!

Thanks Matt! I was hoping for a good number of Kohaku, but expected a wide range in the outcome. A few more Kohaku this time, but not too different than the previous Sanke/Sanke paring I did in 2020. This was more of a convience than a planned pairing. The male spawned quickly with the female Sanke from 2020, so I gave him a couple days to recover and put him with the Kohaku and they spawned that first night.

I have two other spawns that I haven't posted yet, the Sanke/Sanke I mentioned above, and a Goromo/Goromo. This Goromo spawning looks pretty nice - largest fry I've ever produced. I've found that Goromo take a long time to reach their true color a patterns. The group from 2020 are still developing. One exception was in 2019 with the Kohaku used here, crossed with a Kohaku-like fish that came from a Goromo/Goromo (different mother than the one mentioned here). They produced a very nice female Goromo with a nice Kohaku pattern and Goromo coloring/netting.

So the male used in this spawn had just been in another spawn a couple of days prior right? Do you think the fertilization rate of most of the eggs was good? I had heard someone once say males needed a month to recover. So much for that. From your comments and previous threads, I gather this sanke Attachment 603613 is him. Nice!

The primary reason I call her "not great" is the pattern is pretty poor and the shimmies that developed (my other Kohaku don't have shimmies, so it's the fish not the water). This was a "grab bag" from Kodama, so you get what they pick. Regarding the Sanke Male (same one in the link you included), yes he had just spawned two days prior. He was the only male with this Kohaku female. The ferritization rate seemed pretty good. I see no noticeable difference between this and the other Sanke pairing. That said, this Kohaku female is much larger (lot more eggs) than the Sanke female, so the ferritization rate could have been lower, and still result in about the same number of fry. Again, this was a bit of an experiment. Part of my thought process was that if the fry inherit shimmies it will not matter too much on the Sanke fry. Also, I'm trying to increase the size of some of my fish and she's one of my bigger ones.

I can understand the thinking of pairing a kohaku that has shimmies with a sanke. So do you think shimmies are an inherited thing? There are probably threads on that, but have not studied studied it much. Of my three adult kohaku, one developed a shimmy, and one developed several shimmies. Ant the third one had a shimmy when I got it and it went away. They are all unrelated to one another and have all been in the same water.

No, I have not dug into this at all. I was going on a hunch - nothing more. Do I believe that shimmies are inherited? I really don't know, but my guess is that they likely are, but they may be more complicated than just a simple inherited trait. There may be more than one mechanism that results in their appearance. If you ever come across a good reference, please share with the group !!

Just took random scoops into the tank and pulled out these two.

Patterns look good, especially for random scoops. I suppose the light pinkish areas on the body will turn white in time right?

Thanks Matt. I "think" these pink areas will turn more white, but this is my first attempt with this pairing, so it's a gamble! That said, the lighting when these pictures were taken seemed to cast a more pinkish tone. In person they looked better. Not saying they are anything special, but at this point I see some interesting fish developing.

Good ones Sean, some eye-catching patterns. Maybe I miss it, do you have picture of the parents somewhere?

      Thanks Matt.

The male was used in my 2020 Sanke pairing. Here's a picture.

Congratulations on the progress, some are showing a nice body already, it will be interesting to see how the sanke offspring's Sumi will evolve, will it stay relatively similar or will it do the trick of "baby" Sumi falling off and then definitive Sumi coming up at a later stage. Ciao
