August is hatching time for Gopher Tortoises and i noticed this little guy in the road and he seemed distressed, but had good body weight . Normally I allow them to go about their business, but in this instance, something was off. I got him out of the road and when I got him home, thinking he may need to be hydrated, I noticed his eyes were closed. I had some ophthalmic Neosporin, so used that and called a rehabber As luck would have it, we are attending a luncheon tomorrow at Naples Botanical Gardens and there is an approved wildlife rehabber minutes away. So hopefully they can help the little guy/ girl.

This tortoise showed up as a hatchling in August of 2021 and had a rough start. Its little burrow was in an area the horse used and during a daily check, I noticed the horse had stepped on the tunnel and collapsed it. I dug the little guy out and he had been compressed in the sand, but once freed was unharmed. Since then, deer have collapsed the tunnel two more times....so I put a piece of 3/4" plywood over the entrance and the collapses ended and the tortoise, 18 months later, has put on size and actually dug a stable burrow. < g >
