Koi gets redness, how often does this happen?

      Hello friends:

I have had a comfortable calm time since fluke + chilo outbreak for 3 years ago.

But I still have an irritating problem that comes time to time: Localized redness.

One kind is individual scales turning red, and the redness in on the scales, not beneath the scales, with other words not skin infection. I am not so much concerned with this kind of redness, as it disappears by themselves or heals after iodine treatment. I have no good explanation to this kind of redness.

The other kind is redness for an area, and the redness is beneath the scales, with other words probably skin infections. And it usually happens on only one or two koi, not the other 25+ koi. Earlier I did scapings of these areas, and I could not see any parasites. Iodine usually remedy it. I wonder if anyone has an idea what the cause is?

It cannot be single-cellular parasites as I often do PP-treatment. The only parasite that PP does not kill readily is fluke, but I cannot find any under microscope.

Now I have one koi that has got a red area, and tomorrow I will do scaping and iodine treatment.

      Thanks for your thoughts!

Pictures and wateer quality test numbers for ammonia, nitrite, high range pH, and KH would help. Words don't always convey what is happening.

      Hello Richard:

      Thank you for your answer!

Since this phenomenon has been observed over several years and the koi have been in different tanks and pond situations so I can only give the water parameters of the pond the koi are swimming in right now.

      - Ammonia: 0

      - Nitrite: 0.2 ppm (never got it to 0 during all my years, no matter what I do and what situation it is. The tap water showed indeed 0, but the fish water will always have some nitrite. So my explanation is that this kit I am using is very sensitive. Anyway I have added enough NaCl)

      - Nitrate: Not measured (the pond has much carpet algae, so it cannot be very high. Last year it was constantly 10-15 ppm, and the feeding is similar)

      - KH: 70-80 ppm (a bit low, as I am using baked soda Na2CO3 instead of baking soda NaHCO3, which I want to use up. pH-value is closely monitored for safety).

      - pH: 7.5-8.5 (Very difficult to see the color difference within this range with the drop kit I am using. But at 9.5 it will show a dramatically different color, therefore I am still using it, as too much Na2CO3 will reach a pH-value as high as 11.3)

Today I did scrapings from the reddened area and the gills, nothing moving can be found. I used 400X and I am an experienced microscope user. The gills looked normal as well. So I just treated the reddened area with iodine, nothing more.

That looks to be a bruise from slapping something. It could be a piece of plumbing, rock coping, skimmer weir. It should heal itself.

Thank you Richard! Not strange that I time to time get this kind of localized redness on individual koi. I am at least using submersible pumps.

      Update:

I think that my topical iodine treatment 3 months ago has made things worse, and it had not yet healed when I moved it into the indoor pool for over-wintering 3 weeks ago, when the water temperature was dropping to 5 centigrade. The red area was smaller, but the redness was more intense. So I did topical iodine treatment again before I dropped it into the pool.

Now the redness has neither deteriorated nor improved during these 3 weeks. The size of the area is about 2-3 scales. There is no open ulcer, but the scales are elevated, not standing up.

I wonder what you more experienced people would do in this case? Thanks!

If iodine is not helping, maybe try antibiotics spray (tricide neo)? Or try swab antibiotic oitment like neosporin. Having nitrite means your biofilter is not sufficient to convert them into nitrate in time.

Thank you for your advice. But I wonder if I need to treat it or just wait and see? Hate the trouble of treating koi as it often makes things worse.

Usually bruise should go away in a week or so, netting the fish can cause bloody scales/fins as well.

      Update:

It has improved greatly since last time, without having done anything. Now there is only a slightly pink mark left.
