My Insane Garden

Yep! Like everything else in the past, Now I have become obsessed (OCD) with gardening. The greenhouse slab is done. The garden keeps expanding and raised beds being built daily all over the 10 acres. If the crops are productive, we will have enough to feed a city and possibly even enough for a small country

So far we have planted 60-70 different things and the list continues to grow.

When Mary starts keeping the horses there at the farm have her put the stall cleanings into one large pile let is set there and cook for a year and ft hen use it to top dress your raised beds tell her to keep two piles going because you don't want to use the fresh

If you are going to keep one of your front in loaders you can turn it ever so often so it will all heat up and destroy weed seeds inter hay a huge pie of horse poop and shavings gets pretty hot put some water oniteverso ofte too hepthe composting in my younger days I hauled and loaded over 200 loads of it to put on ours and neighborsgardns

I just read when the stink bugs get on your squash and pumpkins sprinkle the with ground cloves and it will get rid of the bugs

you should try and find some sweet potato slips and plant some of them in that light sandy soil they should do well

I can relate. I grow most of what we eat and we never finish what has been grown in the year before, so it accumulates in the freezer. Our neighbors probably wince when they see me coming with buckets full of produce.

And I'm a sucker for growing new things, so when those darned seed catalogs come out each winter, I spend days and days going through them and ordering seeds, seeds, and more seeds. And the places I order from always send free seeds that of course I have to plant. They aren't helping.

I always start my own plants from seeds. I would hate to have to afford to buy as many plants as I use each year. Seeds are much less expensive and I enjoy doing that. There isn't that much to do in February and March here, so starting seeds inside is a good activity.

I keep trying to cut back, but it's a futile exercise. There are just too many things I want to try.

Best of luck with your gardening project. It's addictive, but very rewarding, and a pretty healthy activity, I think.

It's worth becoming a little cautious on this subject. For some reason, over the last decade, farmers have been using some very persistent broadleaf herbicides in their hay fields. Persistent enough to go through the horse, through the composting process, and still be very effective. Most of the cases I've heard of were in the South, but some were as far away as Australia. Some gardeners have had to scrape the soil out of their beds and start completely over - and these were people who were full bore organic gardeners. Joe Lamp'l even did a show about how he accidently destroyed his garden that way.

Folks say now that unless you know the person who grows what the horses eat, it's best to be cautious.

Being where you are you might want too plant the Cole crops really early and try a fall planting too. Also plants like pansies and flowering kale and cabbage do best if planted in the fall. A big bed of tall snapdragons would look great all winter also. Keep up the pics have they got the greenhouse finished yet.?

Mary just got an email saying it would be shipping next week or the week after. Like everything else, I think it is made and shipped from Communist China. Then a 3 man crew flies in from Oregon or someplace to assemble it. I want the old USA back

Soon I will be at war with all the PREEBIRTS - birds, worms, funguses, rodents, pests, animals and other undesirables.
