      mossy growth on koi

Hi guys, so this is going to be a growing forum for me. I have to run to work now but need to know what I need to order. My koi are just becoming active and I noticed my big girl, a koi of 22yrs with mossy growth on her head. So I know this is from an infection or an underlying wound. Luckily, I already have my quarantine system up and running for months now. I have protform-C on hand. This is what I seen I may need. I also seen I may need to inject antibiotics. I've never done this, but I'm an RN. I'll just have to do some research. I just want to try to save her. I will post pics as I move her to quarantine. Ty guys

A bowl some salt and a 99cent paint brush, bowl the koi with just enough water to keep the mossy area exposed out of water and have the salt paste ready to apply with the brush and repeat a week later, keep the salt paste away from the eyes you want a paste not salt water and that should do it

OK that sounds super simple, TY Orlando. Now what I read the mossy growth is normally caused by dead tissue. Do you believe I will find a wound under the growth? Just wondering if it would be better to bring her inside to quarantine or leave her less stressful in the pond.

The salt paste is a good treatment and could be all that is needed. You will see any infection below the SAP fungus when you scrub the area with the salt paste, and if it is infected and you decide to do injections, then you first need a source for injectible antibiotics, which are hard to come by. Then, my preferred means of injection is to sedate the fish with clove oil or MS-222, then turn the fish over and lift the one of the pelvic fins, and inject in the soft spot, aiming the needle at about a 45 degree angle toward the head. Many instruct shooting through the scales, but the needle will often pull a scale out, where shooting in that soft spot, there are no scales. The second application should remedy pretty much anything the first treatment reveals and you can treat the koi in the pond without having to remove it to another area causing more stress.

Just read that initial treatment was successful but it's going to take time for the wound to heal, intervention and recovery
      are two different stages, congratulations
