Should I be pruning my Koi? I'm sure parts shouldn't fall off.

It sounds stupid but I lost the end result of a beta breeding project to his fins. His fins and tail were 150-200% of his body length. What this meant is when he tried to move all he could really do was send waves through his fins and tail. We though it was pretty hilarious when we thought it was harmless. Then he died.
When I mentioned this at the LFS I was told breeders back in Thailand trim the fins so as to keep top end breeder males from dying that way.

Well part of my butterfly koi's tail just fell off. I was not aware this was something that could happen. Parts of your fish are not supposed to just fall off.

The fish seems to have not even noticed and they are both happy and healthy as far as I can tell.

Should I prune the fins and tail shorter?
Was this a weirdness never before seen, so I shouldn't worry about it?
Is there some defect in butterfly koi?
There isn't some sort of crazy cichlid like, Koi aggression, that I haven't heard about is there? Full moon? I'm sure I would have heard about that by now.

61 views and 0 replies makes me suspect that this is unusual. Well I'll keep an eye on the fish and see how things grow back or if anything else falls off.
      Maybe it has lizard DNA.

      Sorry
I couldn't help, but maybe some will notice and reply eventually

Koi don't typically lose fins. Longfin will shred and tatter the ends of the fins. This would appear to be the result of some form of trauma, like striking the tail against a hard object or getting it caught in a filter/pump/plumbing. It will likely grow back over time, but never to the same extent that it was before this.

This happened to a watonai of mine, from trauma during spawning. The piece of tail fin ripped off looked almost exactly the same as in the photo.

It grew back with no problems. She does have a small lump at the base of the tail where it was torn off, but otherwise it is fine.

Personally I wouldn't trim any fins. That just seems a bit cruel to me.

I heard one flip in the tank and maybe hit the glass cover. So food enthusiasm may have been the issue. Only thing in the tank are a foam filter and another koi.
