IBC to grow out the fry

      Hi

As mentioned in my other threads, I decide to set up a (low cost) grow out for the totally unexpected fry I got this year (after only 1 year with koi).
I used an IBC a friend gave me, an old fluval fx5 (probably 10 or 12 y.o.) and two plastic boxes drilled and filled with expanded clay as a shower.
The media I used was already cicled in the main tank, so I only have to colonize the sponges of the fx5 and the expanded clay of the shower. I used 50% old water and 50% new.

To start and properly colonize all the midia I only collected 13 fish, 10 of them being the very dark ones I have in the tank (the vast majority of the fry). I left most of the prettier ones in the tank that will be collected in 2-3 weeks
They had this color in the tank:

Here is a brief video with the system in place (comments in portuguese...sorry):

And a few pics of 13 settlers:

One day later, they were eating and.... golden instead of black.

Question: this change of color is most likely due to stress ? being in a white environment instead of a dark one ? normal evolution of the color? all of the previous ?

They look awesome. I think they are chagoi? If so it's not uncommon to see sumi change due to environmental / stress factors.

My two ochiba get lighter in winter, darker in summer. Is your water cooler indoors JoaoM?

I’ve also noticed the sumi on showa and utsuri fry lightens a lot when I net them. So maybe fear affects it too.

      Thanks for the input, Matt,
The water indoors is at 22ºC, so probably just a bit hoter than outside (2-3º C).
However, the sun outside may also be a factor.

While feeding, i sccoped a few more today. Added 5 black to the IBC and released the others.
This is how the black ones look immediately after being netted:

As said, I released the others, but really like these two

Quite a dramatic change with only 2 days in the IBC

I believe in a week more it will be totally golden. If so, it is possibly because of the all white environment vs the dark one in the pond

Wow, I don’t know. Maybe you should put them in a red tub!

      Hi Matt

That is something to be considered in the future

Out the 24 already in the IBC, 20 were black in the main tank

      Look at them now...
