Question Will an exposed hole cave in? Anyone use HDPE?

Sorry for all of the questions!

EPDM liners are now out of stock in most places...Until January!

If I have a 30×40×4 foot hole, vertical sides, in Virginia red earth dirt...

Will the walls cave in being vacant for 3-4 months?
Will it fill with water and not dry up?? I can use a sump pump, but rather not have muck clay left to deal with and dry out.

I'm finding reviews of HDPE contradictory. Many say all good things, others have tons of bad things. It's strong to some, not needing a liner and tougher against rips n tears. Others are opposite, saying it's weak and will scratch, which will slowly cause cracks and leaks. It's a ton lighter, which is good, because it's just me and husband who will have to carry it. I don't mind it not being super flexible, like EPDM. I've used PVC liners for the bogs, and know those are stiff and do get brittle quickly. The HDPE is supposedly a little easier to handle than PVC and much stronger.
I won't be putting any holes in the liner, will all be coming up over the edge. So, no issues with leaks from plumbing holes.
That would be the only liner available to me right now.

All locations are different. If on my property it would fill with water and the sides would deteriorate in that time frame.

Have you looked at RPE (reinforced polyethylene) liners?

I'm not familiar with the HDPE liner however, our 5000 gal pond liner is made with 80 mil PE liner used for reservoirs and wastewater applications. One of the wastewater plants I worked at used this liner for their 1 acre surface area facultative lagoons with huge aerators in full sun in Hawaii. The liner for the lagoons was exposed to the elements about 8' around the lagoon perimeter. After seeing it, we decided to use this instead of EPDM, and cost was comparable. The company cut and fit the liner to our pond and to accommodate the skimmer and 2 bottom drains. They did an excellent job.

1000s of people have used EPDM roofing material with no bad effects. Looks like it's also available now in large sizes.

      I'm not asking about EPDM.

Website I found says 10 years uncovered or 20 years if buried.

Anyone ever buy from either of these before?

      Half off ponds.

      Just liners.

Just liners has two different prices, so I question them.

Half off ponds has the EPDM liner size I need.

I don't have experience with those retailers. I got my liner from https://webbsonline.com/
I looked real hard at alternative liners. I know a guy in my local pond group that used the reinforced poly liner. The pond looked fine and the material looked very heavy duty, and I think it was a bit cheaper too, but he said it was very difficult to shape to the curves of the hole. What turned me away from it was I couldn't find a way to patch it. If it ever got a hole, no one could tell me how to repair it. I'm sure there's a way, but no one knew and I couldn't find an answer online. So I went with the regular rubber liner like everyone else uses.

RPE repairs easily. Clean thoroughly and fuse a patch of same material to the section with a heat gun. Or use some of the double sided super tapes with a patch.

      Halfoffponds

Graystone creations told me liners will go up 40% soon and to buy now if I can find it. Luckily, I did.
