      Need help with scrape wound

I just took in some rehomed fish from another person. We were both loading the fish into totes for transfer. When I got home I noticed one of the koi had a big wound near its mouth where some of the skin peeled back. It is a fairly large piece of skin hanging loose. I was going to sedate and treat the fish with iodine, neosporin and liquid bandage hoping to help him out. My question is do you think that will work and should I remove the loose skin that is hanging before I treat the fish??

If it looks to be superficial, then I would cut the flap off and treat. If it is more severe, I think I would try to use superglue to re adhere it, like doctors are using for stitches now days.

What kind of super glue would I use? Is there a medical type or just a normal type?

Well we sedated the koi, cut the loose skin off with a scalpel. We then cleaned wound with peroxide and iodine. Then applied neosporin and liquid bandage. Also raising the salt level in the quarantine tank to try and prevent any bacterial or parasite infections. Fingers crossed to see how he makes out.

Be sure to keep a close eye on the water parameters, primarily ammonia, if filter is not completely cycled or non existent.

Luckily we met with the guy about two months ago and decided we would take his fish in so we had time to cycle a a filter system and be ready for when they arrived. We are still checking the water parameters constantly though after we added the fish this weekend lol.

So far so good. He is swimming and eating normally. Now its just trying to keep the water perferct for him and watch for any type of infection. Today we will be raising the salt to .4% to help.

Why are you adding salt to .4?

I am impressed with how organized you were and not panicking. I hope it works out. Beautiful fish that deserves a chance. Thanks for the video too.

Thanks Longfin Lover. That was my wife working on the fish. She was a little nervous beforehand but she did a great job.

Hi KDH. A breeder from a local koi farm we talked with recommended we raise the salt level in the quarantine tank to .6% for a week to kill any parasites as part of the quarantine process and to help with healing and kill any potential parasites. Then to do water changes to reduce the salt level and add a canary koi from our regular pond in with them and watch for another week before we add the rehomed koi into our regular pond.

We would have no problem injecting with an antibiotic, but not sure how to go about getting an injectable antibiotic. Any ideas on what type or where to get an antibiotic? We were interested in doing that if it would give the fish a better chance at healing.

Getting injectible antibiotics can be tricky. It takes a vet, and most are not willing to work with you as they don't treat fish and don't want to get involved. Parts 18 and 19 https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showt...ive-Discussion cover the method and the varieties of antibiotics with dosage levels. I have and used Baytril as the first line antibiotic. Take this info to your vet and beg.

      BTW, excellent surgery. Impressed.

Thanks. Thanks for the links too. They Baytril seems like a pain to get. I’ll talk to my dog’s vet if I have too. She knows how great we treat the dogs, so she might give me some. But I’ll hold off on antibiotic injections for now. We just fed the fish and he is looking pretty good. So I’ll continue to monitor the wound closely and keep a close eye on the water parameters as well.

While you’re begging, send the vet your video. They are bound to be impressed with your dedication!

Ha! Me and the wife said the same thing last night. "Heck, we can show her the video so she sees exactly what we are talking about" lol
