      Dead Koi

About 3 months ago I moved about 30 Koi from my back yard pond to a large natural mud style pond.

Last week while I was out of town I got a voice mail for the guy that has the pond. He said that one of the Koi a 15 yr old Niigata Koi had died. He thinks it was bitten by a snapping turtle. I am not so sure. Does this look like a bite wound to you?

Also he dissected the intestine and said he found no food but a bunch of bottom muck and a few stones? I than normal for a mud pond Koi?

Sadly I missed all of this in person as I was out of town.

      Any thoughts are appreciated

That does not look like a turtle bite. Because of the black color, I can't be sure what it looks like, but I am guessing contamination of an ulcer by black mud. There is evidence in the scales surrounding the wound of inflammation, which would indicate bacterial infection, but it doesn't appear to be advanced enough to have been the cause of death.

Mud ponds can be quite dangerous. Predators and infection/disease are pretty common causes for loss of life.
