Keep or Cull This 9" Specimen

This guy is from a spawning last August. He's about 9" now. Is he/she worth keeping or should I cull?

It is individual. What are you looking for?

I am looking for a black koi, so I would keep it until I get an really black koi. Provided that it does not have defects.

Keep for a while longer. Looks similiar to my Matsukawabake.

Mine started out white, and developed more black over time. Now still looks different from year to year. I enjoy waiting to see the changes.

      Google matsukawabake images for pictures.

You're right; it does look very similar to Matsukawabake. I don't really want to get rid of him, but I have a pond on the smaller size and need to be selective in order to keep the water and fish happy and healthy. I'll let him go awhile longer to see how he develops. Worst case scenario I may put him on Offerup or Craigslist to see if I can find him a home.

Having a small pond is tough! I started out with close to 40 very small Tosai and had to continuously Cull them due to poor water quality because they kept growing so fast. The positive thing is that you learn how to properly Cull the right fish if you have no experience like me. I'd say keep it for now and see what the Sumi does and Cull later if needed.

I think if you were to get rid of it it is best to rehome...it is at 9 inch already.
