      How about this shiro utsuri

      Hello friends:

Firstly I apologize that I did not have a blue background when I took the picture.

I have 2 questions about my shiro utsuri:

      Name: 20210620_183750.jpg
Views: 674
Size: 33.7 KB

      1) The white part of its head is kind of yellow. Will it turn white?

      2) Its black is not so thick. Can it turn thick with age? Will hard water help?

I bought it as tosai October last year, so I guess that it is nisai now.

      Thanks!

      Simon

Do you know who's the breeder(blood line), that will help answer your questions with better accuracy, I don't think that sumi will thicken up much as far as the head getting lighter don't think so the white is off that won't help the skin on the head. Hard water like colder water temps most of the time helps sumi but I don't think in your case it will matter. What was the water temperature when this picture was taken or I could refrace the question, what time of the year was the picture taken?. If you would like I could post some photos so you can see what to look for on a younger Shiro.

      Hello Orlando:

      Thank you for your reply!

It is just a mutt from Israel. I have no great expectation on it either, just hope that it will be a nice pond grade koi.

Well I believe your SU is male. The yellow head leads me to say that and the the pointed pec fins. The black usually fills in from tail to head. Hard water does assist the black. The age things seems suspect. My understanding a SU will come in with its black in an area in a short period ( weeks; not years).

Ever seen a row of beautiful white teeth?

Noticed that one badly stained tooth in amongst the others.

Why should it be a late developer and become white?

      Update:

Today it looks like this (I will get a real koi inspection tube)

As I can see the blackness is not thick enough. Mutt is mutt. Not an ugly duckling with potential. Name: 20230617_135400 b.jpg

Not bad looking, ok it will not be like a good one from Omosako, the Sumi is not very dark but the shiroji is very nice even on the head and actually goes to show that a yellow skin on the head of a Shiro very often goes nice and white and actually the yellow while young indicates that the skin is thick and eventually turn even whiter than the ones that showed very little yellow to start with

There are no surprises here. Turned out the way it was supposed to based on first pic. But I seriously doubt the sumi well fill in. As there were no indicators in first pic to show it But you never know. It could come up many years later. . Sumi is the most unstable color with koi. Not a bad looking fish at all.

Thanks for posting this picture. I've had the experience too where a young fish has a 'not-so-pretty' coloring on the head to go on to have a nice, solid color there. As hard as it can be to be patient, I'm learning that is necessary
