As to be expected with any new pond with a fair few fish getting a fair bit of food (5kg gone in 3 weeks) I had a bloom of hair algae in the bogs and single cell ones in the water, fish were getting hard to see more than 3' down. Got a new 36w bulb for my old Jebao UV and had it running about ten days then 3 days ago added new Sunsun 36w (this one with spiral flow) and water almost clear now. Fish seem to be growing, two of the small fish from the first purchase are losing their hi - or is it Sumi? Whatever, one kohaku has gone almost completely white and a little ginrin kind of tancho sanke (more like a large red berret), now lost most of the red on the head. No worries, just goes to prove if you want reasonable chances of the fish keeping their colour buy Nisai.

The weather forecast says that by the day after tomorrow the intense heat that has been with us since May should finally start to lessen, maybe even get the odd bit of rain, so I decided to roll back the shading, nice to properly see the pond. The combined 72w UVs have cleared the single cell algae, still plenty of hair algae in the wetlands. The fish seem all to be growing ok so gradually increasing the food. The smaller ones seem to have a good shape and also the Tancho, would like the other Nisai to be a bit thicker. Starting to think what to pre-order for when shipping starts again from Japan

Would really appreciate opinions about the shape of the larger fish, in particular the Gin Rin Karashigoi (the paler one) and to a lesser extent the other two yellows and the (wagoi) Asagi. It seems to me the head is wider than the body.
      Many thanks

      Hi Paul
Its depend on age and size for solid color to bulk
Some males koi are just lengthy for awhile
Feed and stocking about is also improtant
If your filtration can handle then
I’d recommend mix some sink food thus this will give option for the skiddish to eat on bottom
My solid koi usually bulk up the third year from 22” and move on
      Good luck

Thanks, will keep it in mind. The gin Rin Karashigoi is not shy around food, true to the variety it was one of the first to hand feed

The water and koi look terrific!

The only problem with CPL on drones is of course there's no way to adjust them when you're in the air. But I
used one on mine and just tried to adjust it as best I could on the ground and then tried to move my position
till the filter did its job (sort of). You have to be careful not to overload the gimbal too or it'll give you all kinds
of errors. I had one that would screw on like a regular filter on my Phantom 3 camera and was very light.

Here's an old video I did of the ponds using one. I didn't have a gimbal for my phone for the ground shots so I
just carried the drone around using it's camera to record.

Just checked the water, NH3/NH4 0 (liquid Sera, NTlabs and Prodac tests -I like to crosscheck) , NO2, NO3, PO4 all 0 (Sera), KH 5°d (Sera), pH 7.5 (JBL and pHmeter). Temperature has dropped to between 23 and 25C for a few days now.
Over the last 4 weeks I have fed over 5kg of high growth and the filtration has coped really well, I do not know if it is the plants that are taking up all the nitrates and phosphates or it is the hair algae that keep growing with gusto in the wetland areas and I keep partially removing every few days. It would not really bother me, as long as it keeps the water pure and I have dabbled for years with algae scrubbers for the tropical fish tanks. The carbonates have remained low, the water I put in the pond is only 3 or 4 °dKH and the gravel has not added much but it does not seem to have hindered the nitrification processes.
I also have to confess that I left the bottle of pond water about and the wife took a good swig!!! She reports it tasted fine, good job she is a good sport and loves the Koi but I better get flowers pronto!

      Summer never ends

Although the calendar says it is autumn we still have had next to no rain since May and in the next few days we will be up to the high 80's again, my English rose of a wife is starting to wilt by now... Anyhow the fish seem to be doing well, growing at a good rate...I am always waiting for the other shoe to drop but so far so good.

Told my retailer when he starts ordering to keep an eye out for decent Hariwake, Kikusui, platinum Ogon and 3 or 4 step Kohaku (Hasegawa), possibly 6-8 Nisai in total.
      Ciao from relentlessly sunny Italy

      Looking great, Paul !

The weather here is the same. We had 28º C today (82-83 F) but it is supposed to rain tomorrow.

      Ciao

The weather has definitely changed, 5 days ago we were in shorts on the beach and then 2or 3 days of really bad weather with torrential rain and we are wearing winter clothes. The temperature of the water has plummeted from 73 to 50f, the fish have stopped eating and gone to the bottom - you can see some uneaten food on the surface (I have since stopped the feeder), you can see the first snow on the mountains in the background.
I have not yet started assembling the pond cover as I had other stuff that needed doing first, I built another lean-to for the mowers and snowblower (as the one I built last year is now full of rescued dogs), I am now extending the covered area around the cabin (mostly for the benefit of dogs and cats) and once that is done I will finally be able to tackle the pond cover, materials are ready in the new lean-to. Hoping we get better weather in the next few weeks, in the mean time I am checking the batches of koi going on daily on the Ornafish YouTube channel, a few nice Kikusui, no Hariwake yet - if I see a WYSIWYG I like we will see if my retailer can get it
