      Newbie, is this ich(ick)

I might have a small (hopefully) problem with one of my fish, looks like he does not want to eat that much and chills on the bottom, looks lethargic and stays away from the rest of the fish. He also rubs on the water lilies. I noticed it yesterday and now another one is rubbing. I noticed it has some white spots on him, like salt grains, could it be ich(ick)? Thanks! For whatever reason I haven seen ich in a long time, but it sure looks like that
is what you have. Here's link to a post that talks about it and different treatments.
I think there are a number of commercial treatments too but you might look for the
chemicals named in the article to be included if buying a store remedy.

But on the bottle they recommend to use every 24 hours until the signs of disease are not visible.I tend to use the instructions on the bottle. Not long after adding the rid-ich the pond started foaming up Name: image.jpg

These past few days it was scorching here temperatures rising to mid 90ís, my pond last night at 9pm was 76. This morning the fish looks lively and happy but I donít see the one that was sick, heís probably hiding under the hornwort. I also ordered an aerator to supplement the waterfall, should arrive tomorrow. Should I stop feeding for now? Usually I feed them once a day, sometimes twice because the pond is only 6-7 weeks old. I added Laguna Bio-Booster a couple of weeks ago to speed up the process a little but I donít know if the filter is cycled. My last water test was on the 5th with
      PH 8
      Ammonia 0
      Nitrite 0.25
      Nitrate between 10-20

So sorry for your loss. Ich can be a quick killer.
It's also highly contagious so I'd keep up with the treatment. And I'm in total agreement with
you that without a proven reason, follow the directions on the medicine.

Today I did not notice any rubbing, but I will keep up with the treatment for 5-6 days and keep an eye on them. I know that they are not a fancy breed or big koi but the peace they offer after work is priceless.

So sorry for your loss. Hope the others will be fine. Our fish do not have to be a fancy breed or big koi to offer us peace & happiness. Best wishes to you & your fish.

With ich, I would recommend following Duncan's guidance, or do both. Ich has three stages, one of which is embedded in the skin of the fish and not susceptible to the treatments, a second is an egg stage which is again protected from treatments, but then the third is a free swimming stage which is the stage that the ich is susceptible to the treatments. Because of the time in each stage and its temperature dependence, the treatments need to be over a longer time frame. For ponds that do not have plants, I prefer salt as it does not lose strength over time, except by dilution with fresh water, and is easily measured with a salt meter or TDS meter.

Plants don't like salt at the level needed, and will die.

I’ve read about salt and it is the cheapest and easiest way but I do have quite a few plants in the pond and I don’t have where to keep them for 2-3 weeks. After some thinking I’ve decided to do a hybrid between what the bottle recommended and Duncan. Duncan recommends to do treatment on days 1-7-13 but at higher concentration I suppose. So I am going to do treatments on days 1-2-8-9-15-16, basically 2 days of treatment with 5 days of pause in between. Hopefully I can catch the ich on the 3rd stage with my treatments because from what I’ve read it cannot be seen with naked eye when is free swimming.

      Thank you!

UPDATE: after the protocol mentioned above, the fish are all healthy any happy without any more losses. In fact they are so happy that they spawned without me even knowing. I was not expecting some 3-4 inch goldfish to spawn but they did, I noticed them chasing around but I taught they are too small to spawn. Only one fry made it trough. Thanks all for help.
