My pond is slowed such that the back is tapered, shallow, to about 2" deep.
Until recently, I haven't seen any of the fish, they stay in the deep end, where it is 3.5 ft deep. They didn't even come up for food, I assumed they waited until the food sunk.
Recently though, I have seen all of the koi, just sitting still, in the shallow area of the pond, so shallow their top fins stick out of the water. I watched them for a very long time, they are not coming up to the surface to get air. Note, this is only the 5 koi. The rest of the goldfish have stayed out of site in the deep end, under the algae.
Note that there were a huge group of birds, and recently I caught a snake swimming in the pond, and that seems to have scared the birds away. So maybe the koi are less afraid. But why would they hang out still in the 2" deep area of the pond? Any why only the koi and not the 50+ other goldfish?
Any ideas why they are staying in the shallow area so long?
