      Do Night Lights Impact Koi??

Really loving these underwater lights we incorporated into our landscape lighting. Allows for a different level of after-hours appreciation of our pond. However, they go on every night from 8-12PM. May be a coincidence but koi appear less eager to eat first thing in the morning as they did before (also had a series of severe rainstorms here in NY, however all water parameters within normal limits- PH 7.6, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate all zero- not sure if this played a roll). Anyone have similar observations? Do they need more sleep??? Thoughts?

Predators could play a role at some stage?

I would not burn the pond lights till 12 for the sake of it.

      It's just not natural.

      Their eating habit proved it.

      They sleep in now.

      Nice collection

Agreed with coolwon, I don't think leaving the light on until midnight is a good thing. Maybe 10ishes or until the time you go to bed would be a good time.

The reason you have the lights on at night is to enjoy the Koi, but when you are not around guess who is lurking around, predators! That probably why they don't want to come up and eat in the morning, because they are spooked and scared.

Lighted buffet will always attract mink, raccoons and herons as all will feed at night. It's a risk worth taking up to 12pm
      as it's a beautiful view.

I love the lights! Beautiful koi and pond. You could always turn the lights off if you are not out, or away for the evening.

Thanks for all the feedback- wow didn't know Herons feed at night!!! Haven't really had issue with raccoons or other predators- pond sits 20 ft away from kitchen window. Koi are once again feeding aggressively think it may have been a bad batch of Dianichi food (had a weird odor.., got from amazon? ) or maybe they were just getting used to nightlights. Nevertheless will scale it back, if they're anything like people- sleep is so important!! Thanks again

Try setting the timer from 8 to 10 and see how the koi react to feeding. Lights attract bugs. Food for koi. So less appetite in the morning?

I would imagine there is a possibility of more predator issues with lights on. Really don't know. So use lights for your enjoyment and then turn off. No point in keeping them on when your no longer watching.
