Hello friends:
I have finally moved out 6 koi from the over-wintering tank for breeding. I just wonder if these 3 are female:

The 2nd and the 3rd looks like females to me Simon. I can't really tell with the 1st, but possibly female too. But then, I am still new at looking at them. Some of the season veterans here might be able to confirmed it.

# 1 and #3 are females, #2 looks male in the top picture but a little iffi on the bottom picture but am pretty shure it's a male.
And how about these 2? Thanks!
Fish 1, I guess female:
Fish 2, I guess male:
If my guesses are correct I will breed them next year. I think that they are yamabuki, one is grinrin the other not, right?

I concur with both of your assessments
I think you are right ... especially since Orlando agrees.
They each look like quality specimens with good shine and nice robust builds. In a couple of years, you may need sunglasses to look at the pond.
Hello friends:
Spawning with the sanke only resulted in some 30 fry. Most of eggs got fungi, no idea if they were fertilized or not. Likely not fertilized as the most of the koi involved in the spawning are 2-3 year old and very small (35-45 cm).
Anyway, here comes a photo:
All the fry are show below. Comments welcome!
Those are chubby little buggers but you will see how the sumi changes on these koi a good exercise to learn from
Nice fish!
They need to be put on a trendmill for a couple of months
Good sumi on these. Several are a bit plump for this age. Nice head spot on that maruten sanke in the third photo. Interesting hi becko, I think, at the top of that photo.

Update after about 1 year. The best I have got. Some are from the other spawn (same fathers, but a non-ginrin shiro bekko-utsuri mother)
Nice ginrin on many of these. The one that stands out most to me is near the bottom of both of the bottom two photos, with the mostly orange head and dark sumi spots going down the body.
It blows my mind how much of each spawn results in absolutely low quality fish. The Japanese have really spent much of the time culling more than anything.
In this care the parents are of low quality already, so I guess that it is natural that I have not got any high quality fry.
On the other hand, I have been trying to keep my koi hobby affordable, so I am happy with better pond grade ones. I would feel pity if I after all get an excellent fry, as I cannot provide it the best growing conditions.
I also like to keep the costs down. Some ways are searching hard for attractive bargains, buying when they are small, and not buying many confirmed female koi. But my two favorite ways are buying koi that are second hand bargains from friends with higher $ tastes than I and breeding some of my own.
Which sex again! I Thought they were males judged from earlier year´s photos, but when I looked again this time they seem to be female, right?
