      Question Does R/O unit remove ammonia (in chloramine) from tap water?

      Hi,

      I've been using Boogie Blue Plus garden hose filter that advertises to remove chloramine (I tested free and total chlorine to both be zero) but I don't think it removes ammonia. So that arises the question does R/O unit remove ammonia then? cause it seems like doing water change with chloramine treated water is just going to add extra ammonia in your pond.

      Simply...Yes, you will still have Ammonia. Chloramine is a compound of chlorine and ammonia that is added to tap water to
      control bacteria. Once the bond is broken between the two, you have both Chlorine and Ammonia. You have to address both. The carbon filter address the Chlorine but not the Ammonia. You will either need to bind the ammonia or have a properly operating bio filter to convert it through the nitrification cycle.

      I do understand the breakdown, but it seems like the answer to my questionis no. I need a catalytic carbon filter instead.

      Catalytic carbon will still leave Ammonia in the water. If your pH coming out of the RO is below 7 (and it should be for a proper RO), then you can run the water through a deionizer to remove the residual ammonia, which is technically present in the ion form of ammonium.

      The deionizer will eventually fill up and need to be regenerated with salt, or exchanged with a fresh unit.

      Interesting. I figured that it would still leave Ammonia behind after breaking down chloramine and retaining the chlorine portion. When I used to put together industrial water pretreatment systems, we broke it down to the chlorine step, followed by the ammonia step.

      I'm not disagreeing with ya, just trying to find any way to purify the water for my koi and the man Russell is pretty knowledgeable. Thanks for your knowledge, though.

      Quite interesting! I need to get a huge DI Resin filter tube to put behind my chlorine hose filter, then. Wanna run like 3gpm through it.

      EDIT: Actually I'll probably just do catalytic carbon, it'll last much longer as it gets better over time.
