Thanks Sean. I also look forward to updates from your Yamabuki Ogon and Kujaku pairing or any others you may have going on.

Today, I netted what I guess would be around 20% of them. These are a few of the better ones (7 weeks old) from that sampling, which and happens to also include the koi from the post above. Aside from that larger one, the others photographed are ~1.5"-2".

I was in for a surprise today when I back-flushed there filter. There were 10 koi in there from 1.75" to 3.5"! They seemed healthy and energetic, but they were all pale. They were white and some had a little pale yellow. None had any sumi, except one with black in it's matsuba scales. I put the 4 best back in with the general population. Maybe some color will come back to them in time.

I didn't expect them to be there, being that I've use almost exactly the same pump screening techniques the previous two years and don't recall that happening.

This is a poor photo, but it shows the type of pale ones that I found in the filter.

Wow, that was a nice surprise!! Any idea how long they had been been stuck? Clearly, they were eating something.... That one in the bottom of the photo looks interesting.

Feeding them in the sunlight today, I could see that some of the larger ones have been good at eluding my net, as I have not gotten a close look at them yet. But here are a few (1.75" - 3.5", 9 weeks old) that I found interesting from the group that I netted the other night. Sorry that some are not focused very well. I believe the greenish looking one is actually due to yellow being viewed through the sumi.

Nice work, from what I understand with metalics is at the beginning you want to pay close attention to the shine on the pecs. Matt you have your hands full running a batch from last year and these from this year, good job

Yesterday, I finally caught them all for the first time and got a good look at some that I had never seen up close before. I now have the numbers down to a much more manageable 40 something.

I fed them some brine shrimp this morning, which they really enjoyed. Then I checked the KH and it turned yellow on the first drop. So it's ~0. The PH was 6.3. Yikes! So I'm adding baking soda to get more of a buffer. I don't know why the KH was so low. It's usually much higher. It hasn't rained much as all in the last month. So it wasn't that.

Very interesting project and very nice fry!

Though I have a question that has troubled me for quite some time and maybe I can ask it here:

Your fry seem to have big head in comparison to their body. I wonder whether it is a thing to take into consideration when you do culling.

Earlier years I have problem with fry turning out to be short-bodied, this year I have been looking for fry with long bodies.

      Thanks!

I do trust the KH test. It is the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals count the drops test. The PH test gave me a reading that I might expect for that KH. Also, they each gave more normal readings for my two ponds and my tap water. After adding 2 oz of baking soda to ~300 gallons, later in the day, the KH was ~30 and the PH had moved up to 7.1, rather like expected.

One spring many years back, we got a whole lot of rain. After one of the big rains, the adults started to flock spawn. Half way through, one of the males dropped out of the chase and died. Shortly afterward, another male started struggling and soon died, and then all the koi stopped swimming, and just hung in the water, pumping their gills. I added baking soda to get the PH back up, and then the rest recovered fine. I hated losing two, but it could have been so much worse. I bought my first KH test kit shortly after that.

I also went to my favorite local dealer and tested the KH in his two best sales ponds. It was zero. The PH was 6.3 (just like my tub was this weekend). He thanked me and started changing water on both ponds right away.

If I had a whole lot of good fry, yes. This year, there were so many fry deaths and various deformities that I have not been too particular with that. I will just let them grow for a while. A prime example is the orange one on the left that is going to have to grow into it's head if is ever to look right. Even if it widens out, it will likely still be short bodied. The yellow-greenish one in the second picture looks like it has questionable gills that kind of bulge out, but not as much as a lot of them in this batch. So that is something I am watching.

One shape issue that I don't like in adult koi is a head that is too small so that the body bulges out abruptly right behind the head. When I buy koi, I try to make sure they have a big enough head to grow into. But occasionally one will really balloon out anyway.

I dipped them up last night for the first time in 4 months. They've grown from the 1.75" - 3.5" range to 3.5" - 5.5" now. These are the better ones which I have moved to the little 1800 gallon pond to join the 1.5-year-old showa group for the winter.

[The four orange one's look similar, but are different koi.]
