Protecting Water Lily Rhizome from Koi

I need help preventing my koi from digging up my potted water lilies. I've been using API Aquatic Plant Media, which is a bit like pea gravel. I'm wondering if a thick/heavy clay soil might help. Any other ideas?

      Thanks!

Protect the root and some koi are still prone to shred the shoots when tender.

Thick heavy clay soil won't help you. I can vouched for that. I have good experienced with Koi digging into them soil well. Go buy them big rocks from Home Depot or Lowes (1" ones) and put them on top of your lilies pots makes sure they are covered enough so the Koi cannot get to the soil. I guaranteed that they will stop digging after that (or at least they will try, but wont get to the soil).

I've had good success discouraging my fish from digging in the plants by covering the top of my potted waterlilies with smooth river rock too. The larger the fish the larger the rocks need to be.

Stones on top or an inch layer of sand will usually stop them from digging in the pots to eat the roots. You may also make sure that the pots are big enough and well balanced to keep the fish from knocking the pots over.

Not only the fish will knock it over, the winds will also knock it over too. If you also have other tall plants that you put in the water garden. I found that out along the way when the winds was a little strong at my house. LOL!
