Oh boy, well its too late now lol let's just hope for no leaks lol. I didnt fill in that side of the waterfall box, figure let it sit and cure and check for leaks once i start filling it. Which the liner isnt in yet, and i still have to dig out the spot for the skimmer..

Tho now I'm seeing something.. how do i make the water fall over the edge if my sides are a little tapered? Seems like its just gonna run over and down the side? Hmm unless i pull that dirt away from the front, put flag stone on the bottom, let it hang over a little bit and maybe do layers of it? Why am I finding this so dang complicated! Wish I had the money, I woulda hired someone lol

I'm not sure how you envision the water exiting the filter but here's one example of attaching the liner to the
      face of the box:

      https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showt...353#post622353

Kent Wallace made a lot of these type of connections on his builds. You might check some of his other
ones listed in this thread (his section is towards the end of the list):

      https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showt...-projects-quot

A strip of extra epdm liner on the outlet will create a sort of weir type flow.
      Here's some more ideas:

Hi Steve, i do have a lip/spillway thing that came with it. But will that be enough air exchange? Thought it should be splashing down into the pond? I think my best bet is, get the skimmer hole dug out, and get the liner in and then play with the spillway. Cuz i cant invasion it unless im doing it. Dunno why, but always have learned better that way. I think im just over thinking everything and am paranoid to make a mistake lol

      Splashing is over-rated.
Water just needs to be exposed to the atmosphere. The splashing in a waterfall isn't enough
to really accomplish anything substantial. An aerated BD will be far more effective. Create the
splash because you enjoy the look and/or sound but not because of any benefit. I'd use the lip
the filter came with. Here's a great post I saved written by RickF about oxygen saturation in water:

That is why dissolved oxygen is a relatively useless thing to measure. Saturation is determined by temperature and atmospheric pressure. Any value above 100 means that there is more oxygen dissolved in the water than the water can hold and that oxygen bubbles will start to form in the water. any value below about 95 means that you do not have enough water movement. The difference between 102.4 and 100.0 is either just the error in measurement or the fact that the water sample was taken at a lower depth (where the pressuer is greater than it is at the surface). The bottom line is that your water has as much dissolved oxygen as it can possibly have.

Oxygen moves in and out of water very easily, so with any decent amount of aeration, the DO should be right at 100% of saturation.

On the other hand water tends to hold on to carbon dioxide, so it takes more effort to drive carbon dioxide out of water than it does to bring the DO up to 100% of saturation. If you are going to monitor something related to how effective your aeration is, then dissolved carbon dioxide makes more sense.

With proper aeration, dissolved carbon dioxide can be driven very low, because the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is much much lower than the saturation point in water is. The amount of oxygen in the atmosphere is much much higher than the saturation point is water is.
      https://www.koiphen.com/forums/showt...ed-Oxygen-Test

I know the feeling of not being sure how to go forward. Just know you can "undo" most anything you try but it doesn't work or
look like you wanted. Sometimes it's expensive and a lot of work to undo.... and you don't want to just jump in without thinking
the project through... but once you've got a plan you think will work, give it a try. It's easy to let the fear of failure prevent you
from ever starting. I've been rebuilding a boat for a few years now and I experience the same thing since I've never done it before.

I figured 28" was WAY too shallow so i figured i could sneak it in at 3' but have a little deeper at one side or in the middle (havent decided that yet)

And yes, going with a liner. Kinda too late to worry about folds now, the hole is almost finished and if I attempt to straighten it into a square, it will cost way more for filtration, liner etc. And i wanted to go bigger originally but some people last fall said because i plan on moving in a few years. Dont go too big.

Also, i was planning on buying a kit. But someone on here said they arent good. But i have no idea what to order that works with eachother. I wouldnt have started digging this soon had I known kits were no good.

The local koi company has a pond set up, exact size as im building 12' round and he just has a waterfall with a filter in it and a skimmer with a uv, a pump and filter stuff in it. Said that was pretty much all i needed. So i figured oh easy enough, i will buy a kit online.

So i either buy the kit and hope I have as good of luck as that koi place or i could definitely use some help with recommendations on what to buy that works together..

      Kinda feeling discouraged
Just a thought... If you are overwintering outside koi will lay on the bottom so go below the freeze line. I am reading the frost line in Connecticut is 42” below the top of grade.

We did try to make that argument early on. I did enough gardening in Fairfield, CT., to know that the deep - 36" to 42" - frostline is no joke. But it looks like that ship has sailed. And no matter what, the pond is going to freeze over, but someone pointed out that as long as there's a good air pump running, there will be enough gas exchange for the koi to survive. Of course, the deeper the pond goes, the warmer the water will be in winter, but again, Elvis has already left the building on that one. We've all got our fingers crossed for the success of this pond.

      Best,

      Bill

I did tried to make that argument to make the pond at least 5'. But it was a no go.

And the benefits of deeper pond is also for koi exercise too. Like Bill said the boat already sailed.

      Hi there 😊

Sorry that I'm a little late in the build but figured that I would chime in and share with you what I did for my skimmer line.

I used aquascapes waterfall filter and signature series skimmer box. Water went through skimmer and evo uv clarifier to the waterfall filter that has filter Matt's and bio balls. That was for my skimmer line. I have a 6000 gallon koi pond with 4' vertical walls. I'm in sunny southern California so I don't deal with winter issues. For the rest of filtration I have two bottom drains that are each connected to gravity fed filters that enter back into pond via tprs, gprs, and waterfall.

Your in great hands as Steve and the rest of the koi enthusiasts in this community are of great knowledge and help. They helped me through my build and I am blessed. Good luck!

Nothing is ever simple and easy for me. The angle of my skimmer isnt lining up with the pvc pipe. Even with a longer piece of pvc, its still a no go. (That joint showing hasnt been glued yet)

Could i use like 2 ft of flex pvc? Assuming I can by it locally by the foot.. Will my primer and glue work with that and hard pvc? The pvc kit i have is the purple and blue glue (rain r shine) and if I can use flexible pvc, will it work with that black rubber coupler coming out from the pump or would i need some other kinda fitting attached to that? I want to keep that coupler as I do want to get one of those check valves and it'll be easier to switch it out with that vs cutting pipe..

If i had the money i woulda just went with 2" flexible pvc for the whole thing. Seems like it woulda been easier...

      Any advice?

You can also buy some flexible pvc to make those final connections.

Well.. theres wrinkles but i gave up trying. The bottom im sure I could have gotten smooth but I was attaching the lip into the waterfall while I just started filling it. Thinking I'll have plenty of time to work them out. NOPE because i backfilled the waterfall box, the front was bowing and I had a hard time lining up the screw holes. And because I didnt have anyone to help, i also had a hard time reaching.. holding the nut while screwing.. wasnt fun because of the height and i got covered in black silicone hahaha and on top of that my sister and brother in law stopped by for a few. So yeah, ran outta time to mess with the bottom.

Buttttt its filling.. im using the water meter. Seems like its going about 100 gallons in 15 mins, dunno if thats good or not? Lol

Right now im at 645 gallons

Still gotta rock around the pond and waterfall. Right now im too busy enjoying filling it up HAHAHAHA

Btw i left 2 mounds to use to get in/out if need be. Thats what those blobs are to the right and i did a deeper hole by them.

So how does everyone put under water lights in a rock-less / ledge-less pond? Seen vids but they always wedge them in the rocks..

Hmmm dont know how but apparently my calculations were off or the water meter is off..

The water is about to touch the base of the skimmer face plate and according to the meter, its 1850.

Why was i thinking it was going to be over 3000 gallons? I highly doubt there's another 1000 gallons until its full?? But who knows, it does get a little wider up at the top. Guess well know soon lol..

Oooooo its just starting to enter the skimmer door!!!
