Color food is fed to your fish just prior to showing your fish at a show.

Protein enriched food for fish up to about 10 " or 250 mm and maintenance/growth after that..

Quality. How deep is your pocket, how long is your arm to reach in .

The Koi name on the packet is double the price.

Do you have real quality fish,to fork for an epensive food.

Bearing in mind it's all ithe jeans.

      Ooops the genes.

You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

Show judges are a very strict bunch of people at a Koi shows

      Very strict criteria whilst judging.

Demorlising for some of the competitors.

      Good enough for most ponds.

My fish live on a tilapia mix.

Ask them if they know any better/

Ok so I want to follow the new guidelines. If I start my comment with " Iím not an expert but" I can comment without anyone throwing a fit?

I am not an expert, but I think the very high end koi food manufactures giggle every time us Americans buy their very expensive koi food.

I had a friend that would chop up shrimp with shells using a food processor and would scramble them with eggs to feed his koi on a regular basis. A large batch would be made and frozen. I told him that's got to be expensive.

His reply "It's cheaper than buying Hikari!".

After thinking about it, how true. He claimed it enhances colors.

I encourage that, but wouldnít you get annoyed if every time you asked a question somebody posted one of the first replies which caused advice from others to go off on a tangent not directly related to the thread you started. If you waste your time again looking back at my threads Iím pretty sure I have never criticized another member for doing this. The first couple of times Emerald did this I was fine with it, but it got old.
Just as a new member and observer...
Emerald answered the question in which the OP asked, to the T. Emerald shared what food they have used and their experience but also didn't claim to know everything (as one should never anyways) And I agree in Jcar's comments about how to treat other members and find it as wasted energy when you could be using it for a greater good. Sharing from a new perspective... your comments are pretty "annoying" to be reading as a new member and seeing these comments you posted not relatively close to what the OP asked. That's all. There's a couple good reads for you to figure out which may be best for you and your koi family! And of course... a happy home, friends and TLC! Don't over do it but treats here and there that are nutritious / good for immune system such as Oranges, Grapefruit, Watermelon (more just for taste), safe Veggies or high protein treats like Gammarus Shrimp, Worms (georgia reds, pinks), etc.

Also play some music for your Koi , add some colored lighting but nothing too harsh, have good plants and roots, stones/etc those are just mood enhancers which overall help with everything Happy Koi!

I've heard the same thing about Shrimp but I don't remember what it is that helps with the color. I need to try Shrimp with mine, I haven't given them those yet. They LOVE Freeze Dried Brine Shrimp Cubes so they should like regular Shrimp.

Probably the same concept as Brine Shrimp.

Here is a good video that explains how the Japanese do it, surprisingly, some of them do use Saki Hikari but they probably get it cheaper than we do.

I'm a believer of genetics and husbandry. Your koi can only be as good as these things allow. Just find a supply of quality koi food and call it a day. You can feed Saki Hikari to Petsmart koi but they will always only be Petsmart koi...

However, I have seen friends who fed JPD with great results...All depends on what you have in your pond and whether you think they deserve the best of the best...

Smoke and mirrors marketing. Feed a high quality low priced blend in your farm and get paid for endorsing and selling a high priced very profitable product geared to hobbyists. If (near)free I can't see any farms turning it down.

It's a good product but definitely targeted and priced to be sold to a niche hobby segment.

While my friend was making shrimp and eggs for his koi he fixed us a plate (without shells). Very tasty!

Forgot to add the eggs with shells are processed in a blender before cooking with shrimp with shells.

This is another great video/series. I learned a ton about feeding and nutrition etc., from him.

I use Aquascape color enhancing formula. I've definitely noticed bolder oranges and reds in my fish.

Brine shrimp is not a shrimp! They are tiny tiny crustaceans. Not arguing the nutritional benefits of either one, but my vote is for full size Shrimp, with eggs!

I've been feeding my koi Mazuri Koi Platinum Nuggets for about 20 years. A 20 pound bag is about $60 at local stores ($3/pound). Food quality is a factor in growth, but so is food quantity. I have a theory that some people will feed their koi more if the food is cheap. I know I do. I feed them lots and often. How good is the growth? Seems good to me, but here are the raw numbers, so you can decide:

      8 female adults (at least 5 years old) - 32", 30", 29", 29", 27", 27", 26", 25", 23"
      17 male adults (at least 5 years old) - 30", 28", 27", 26", 26", 26", 25", 25", 25", 25", 24", 24", 24", 24", 21", 21", 21"

The pond is ~ 12,000 gallons. The 4 that are under 2' are somewhat young (5-6 years old).

I like the color results. But I have no way of comparing it to what it would have been if I fed them something else.

I never worry about waste. It is what it is, to me anyway.
