      The Magic Barrel Lives

It has been over a decade now that this barrel, that functions essentially as a cistern, has produced Victoria seedlings. I haven't added seed to it in years and though it drys out and temperatures here can drop below 40 F in the winter....a few seeds still sprout every year. Which Victoria? Probably V. cruziana, but seed for V. Amazonia and V. 'Longwood Hybrid' were also tossed in there years ago. Once they float pads ( there are a number of them ) I can ID them. I'll link to an article about the barrel and while I am at it, to links for a now quiescent site or two that still are accessible and contain a plethora of info. I realize the photo is not the best....but the sagittate leaf is a give away. The genus Victoria contains some of the earliest angiosperms ( flowering plants ) with fossil records going back to the early Cretaceous ....over 100 million years ago.

Was on a trip up in the St. Paul, MN. area several years ago and visited a very nice botanical gardens (Como Park Zoo & Conservatory) that had a wonderful waterlily display and saw some there! Made me think of you!

For the years I provided Victoria seed to public gardens and the public....and as Kit Knotts had done the seed was free and we paid the postage. We sent from Kew Gardens to Singapore and I made many friends ....among my favorites was Como, they were among the nicest, most dedicated botanists I met. Right up there with the folks from MoBot. Como was nice enough to make me a member and even though I have retired....to this day I get them magazine, the Como Insider and what they do with plants and animals in their frigid climate need ceases to astound me.

The first of the seedlings has floated a pad.....and based on past experience, I see Victoria cruziana. I was hoping for species and not V' 'Longwood Hybrid'. I think I know someone with an amazonica to spare and considering growing a few Vics again. < g >
